6 speed transmission needs to be replaced

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I can't find anything on the 6 speed manual transmission. My outer shaft bearing went and there's metal in the oil. The dealer has them for $8,000. There has to be other options out there. My car only has 60k miles and the only used transmission I even found had more miles than my car. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

They pop up here now and then. Don't forget scotty from advanced automation, kijiji/Craigslist, and consider the JHM kits for 1-2 collar and synchros.

Why not rebuild the transmission? Chances are not that many parts are required and it'll end up being much cheaper than even a used tranny.

Yeah this is good advice , but this generally depends on what hard parts of the tranny need to be replaced. I spent nearly 6k getting mine rebuilt with a 12k mile warranty on top. Im happy with the end product, but if i had to do it again i would try and source most of the parts myself especially the tranny fluid. I feel i could have saved maybe 1500 had i tried to source everything myself.

You should shop this around and go with someone that has a good reputation based on reviews and doesnt sound shady when you speak to him. Also drop into the shop unnanounced and ask questions once youre car is being dismantled.

car-parts.com will be a good resource. Last time I looked a grade "A" trans with relatively low miles is about $1k.

Yea I don't really know who to trust rebuilding this and im gonna pull it out first and see what I'm dealing with. My gears are fine. I'm thinking its just the bearing was starting to go so I might be able to get away with just replacing that but well see. Thanks for the help

This! LKQ has them for between $800 - $1,200 in "Condition A".

Is OP modded or can these manuals really fail that early? Kinda scary something as big as that can fail within 60k miles.

If you dig a littlw....youd see that yes the 6hp28z does fail. Its known to.

If you can pull it apart and see what exactly is wrong then bring it to someone thats not trying to bullshit you you should not apend that much. Check your rear seal while youre pulling it out. Once rebuilt you should be fine, as long as you replace the fucked up parta with the new revisions. New tranny internals and new OIL....youre set. Dont forget that rear seal, thats known to fail as well.

Sorry to hear about your troubles atrainbaby86.

This is the first failed manual I've seen on the forum, not counting the clutch, so it's a bit early to be worrying about them as a general failure point. For reference I've been k04 for ~15K miles and currently have no transmission issues and I drive 'spiritedly' just about every time I get in the car. This seems like a outlier -- either something stupid happened or there was a defect in the transmission from the factory.

Mods should not do fuck all to a manual transmission. At all... Manual transmissions from Audi generally handle 2.5x the power that the car came with stock on a bad day.

Im pretty sure its just the outer bearing, sounds like it's coming from the back but there's already metal in the fluid. Im gonna see what I can do when I pull it out.

Yeah I was gonna say... As long as you're not doing this or this, your hard parts should pretty much last the life of the car.

The clutch, on the other hand...

You could even get it delivered to your house and swap it out on a Saturday. If first time, give yourself the entire weekend. Anyone who gets this done at the dealer is retarded. Also, anyone that rebuilds the broken transmission will probably pay more AND end up with something less reliable than a used factory-built unit.

Ordered one today with 31,000 for only $675 since they had it on the shelf for 100 days. Can't beat that. Thanks again everyone
