    Help! Manifold Question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
On the cusp of buying a B6 S4. When I looked at the engine yesterday, I noticed the manifold seems to be melted(ing?). I have a few questions: Is this common? How problematic is this? Is it an easy fix? How much? Is this a deal breaker? Pic below. Thanks for your help!!

wow.. I've never seen that before... but considering that the manifold is made from plastic/composit material... I would venture a guess that , that bank may have overheated at one time, have you done a compression/ leak down test, and have you borescoped the cylinders?.. that would be the first things I would do before buying...

I could be wrong, but that's my guess... I'm sure someone who knows more will chime in...

Sent from the S4 with a Tap!!!
My S used to have a tap, a valve slap... now it makes no noise at all! RIP

are you sure about that ? from what I've heard/read , the manifold is made of a certain aluminium-magnesium alloy.

my manifold looks a bit like this around the injector holes, seems like the paint/coating is becoming detached from the surface( I'll have to powdercoat it soon)

it seems way to light to be made of a metal alloy, I could be totally wrong, but I've machined magnesium and it's a bit heavier.... I hope I am wrong for the sake of the OP...

also, if you look at the bottom of the manifold, it almost looks like it's been wrapped..... but again, like I said, i hope I'm wrong

most B6's came with a magnesium alloy intake. B7's came with plastic

I haven't ran a compression test on the car yet - will have it done this week.. Car runs fine and doesn't overheat on temp gauges, has reg oil changes and isn't burning oil.. I know the owner re-powder coated the top of the manifold when he did the valve covers.

Is this a red flag? I could always get a new manifold to throw on the top, if it is that problematic.

I have 2 tops. Couple scratches on the paint. Can sand blast one if you want to get it powder coated. Pm of you want to talk more on it.

My wife's 4.2 allroad manifold is doing something similar. I think the paint is just flaking off. Hope you snag it soon.

I might upgrade the manifold anyways, which hopefully would happen within the first few months of owning the car. I made an offer on this thing yesterday and am hoping to be an S4 owner by the end of this week :)

Sweet! Good luck. I've only put a little over 2k miles on it but I love it so far.

My intake manifold cover's paint chipped pretty badly, had to powder coat it. My valve covers are doing a similar thing so they'll be done soon. It also looks like you have a broken "V8 - 4.2" vanity piece.

Maybe he sprayed it with brake clean or some other harsh substance to clean it up a bit. Ate the paint away
