    Oil filter change question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Shop that did my oil filter last left it insanely tight.
Got it off eventually with great pain. Noticed putting it back there is a small raised line on the plastic cartridge and another one on the housing. I tightened until the two lines alligned and left it.
Is this correct ? I figure it can't be a coincidence.

I just snug it up with a 36mm socket and have never had a problem.

True. It's hard to go that lose with a 36mm socket on a 1/2" drive. But those are just plastic threads....

I think hand tight then 1/2 turn is usually sufficient. Depending on how much of a stud you are.

Over tighten and the seal can bunch and then you are pissing oil.

I don't see why Audi thought this was a better idea.

Driven and worked on German cars for years. If there is a simple way and a complicated way, the Germans go for complicated every damn time.

Well for those who find it difficult to to get a torque wrench in there or can't gage hand tight, look for the lines. Felt hand tight and doesn't leak.

That is awesome to know! Thanks for posting that, when both me and my father changed them (two separate cars) they were on there! 3/4 ratchet took care of it quick but we knew it shouldn't be that tight. This makes sense that they would actually mark it and I will look for this next time and show him this so he knows on my mothers car! Thanks!

Speaking of which, I am in for an oil change this week at the dealer. I let them take care of it for $69.95 for oil & filter, top off washer, brake fluid, and a nice wash. Been letting them do it since new. Nice, clean and easy. Coffee, Danish anyone?

Is not that I'm cheap or anything but i Don't trust anyone with my car especially oil changes. before i wrenched always had problems with oil changes not being tope off or using the correct oil and shit. Now i put mines on ramps and take me literally 10 mins since i took of my belly pan to avoid scraping. for me an oil change should be cheap but paying almost $80 to loosen a nut is a rip off in my eyes.

By the time I use 5 qt of Mobile 1 and a new filter, I've got a little over $40 in the oil changes I do. So his $69.95 including car wash and couple of those big soft cookies while I watch that tight-skirt sales lady getting in and out of an R8...........well that really doesn't sound like a rip off at all.

My Audi dealer isn't conveinient. Plus its an opportunity to climb under and see what else is going on. That's how I noticed some other small leaks I fixed. I also quite enjoy wrenching my car .. well except for Maybe February in Canada.

Gonna do the rear brakes this weekend. I heard there's a real PITA allen head bolt I have to deal with so im looking forward to it :)

Exactly. After factoring in the new oil, new filter and all the other stuff, it is chump change. Not to mention, not a drop of grease on me and the best part is I don't have to deal with recycling old oil. Oh yeah, the broads are hot too!

^^Never have problems with swirl marks. The porters hand washes with soft material, then dries it off with a chamois. Been doing it since '08.

Ok let's not get off in the weeds boys( well unless you want to do that to the R8 girl). This thread was just to help DIYers along the road a little. Makes putting filter housing back on painless and worry free.
