Do I sell or rebuild and keep?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The other night I'm driving about 50km under a bridge and I clutched in and revved it to about 4K RPM I heard a rapid tick then the car shut off I was still rolling I put it in nuterul clutched in and Reyes starting it...it turned over and over but wouldn't start , then I'm still rolling tryed bump starting in second and it just bogged and sort of locked up I come to a complete stop I turn the key off let it sit for 10 minutes go to start it and it just clicks as if the engine is seized, today I pulled everything apart in the front end and turned the crank bolt by hand with s breaker bar the bolt was loose and turned about 3 full rotations before it grabbed Moter spun intill certain spot and locks up engine is seized in thinking there's a valve hitting a piston ?
I've already spent a ton of money trying to bring this thing back to life from lreveious owener was running fine intill 2 days ago when I got a bad misfire and both cam sensor codes and run lean code.

Should I replace the Moter with another one one , rebuild this one or build this one up and or sell the car and take a loss on it? Somebody help.

Check timing and then pull the heads to inspect.

If its the timing it depends, since you tryed to start it several times it could be possible that you gonna need a new piston and head, assuming its just one side! Best thing to do is start to take everything apart and get to the actual problem. If you decide to rebuild take your time and look for the best part at the best price and if you dont have time just source a nice used motor, you can get them cheap if you research and look for it

I went through this a while back. I'm betting you dropped a valve. Your best bet is to source a decent used motor. This is what you're more than likely going to find

I found a used motor at my local VAG shop for a decent price. I'd check your local shops and here on az. Good luck!

sounds like it needs an engine if the crank bolt was loose, when was the timing belt last done? These don't have the problems like the 1.8t does of shearing the timing belt gear on the crank snout so I'm betting it was improperly torqued when the front crank seal was done at a timing belt interval.

was it diy or was it done at a shop? I see you're local, there aren't too many reputable Audi/vw shops around here.

It was done at a "professional Audi tech" in Toronto by previous owner

I paid 500 stripped of all components. It's a BEL BF out of an a6.

I would definitely look into the loose crank gear. Sounds like it jumped time

Pull your spark plugs and use a boroscope if you have. That way you can avoid wasting time pulling the heads.

Like others have stated, if you dropped a valve or ran into some serious damage, used motor is cheapest.

    good luck

could be crank gear .. they have a notch on the inside... when that notch break due to motor seized motor or they break over time now you prob of timing and maybe bent a few valves .. .. best way to tell is put motor in TDC and put in a crank lock pin.. if it goes in smoothly then the crank gear is fine and you definitely have to re time the motor with a possibility of damaged valves. IF the crank gear is fucked thenthere are two extremes either you are off just a 1 or 2 teeth and might get lucky with no bent valves wher you have to just replace the the crank gear. Or the other were you bent some valves and have to replace together with crank gear. Anyone correct me if am wrong or suggestion!

As others have stated, I'd recommend a new motor as the most cost effective way to get the car running if your current engine has a significant amount of work needed. You can find good condition motors complete and running for under $1000, just make sure the motors are compression tested and healthy prior to buying.
