What should be here? Somethings missing, exposed flywheel

Was doing my first oil change on the USP last night and when changing the filter, I noticed I could see the flywheel! What is missing here?

It looks like the crank position sensor, if you look along the firewall the plug for it should be the white one

If that was missing, I'd think I'd throw a code and wouldn't run right, but all feels good, and no fault codes...

Weird... It appears that there can be something there since it has mounting holes, but it does appear there hasn't been anything there for some time. If it's normal, I'll leave it, it just doesn't seem right to have the flywheel exposed like that...

    And thanks!

A4 isn't even on the list of cars it will fit, nor is that part coming up in a search with A4 as the vehicle type. If it's the same size, I'll get it anyway, rather have that hole plugged...

I didn’t see it for the A4 either but, as Old Guy said, I think the opening being unplugged is pretty typical. My Avant has a TIP but I’ve run my VW 6MT with that opening both closed and open with no ill effects.

I think its a hangover from B3 era, the CIS cars had two crank sensors.

(or maybe later V6 had the single one on the bell housing instead of in the block, I've never worked on V6).

    Normal.

b6 1.8t is longitudinal so that's why you're not seeing the A4 on the fitment list for that plug.
