    Looking into an S5...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, never thought I'd be back here but alas, here I am. I sold my B5A4 back in 2006 I think...It was the Second 1.8T A4 with a t3t4, ever. Anyway, enough history...I currently drive a 2007 Infiniti M45 Sport but quite honestly, I'm a bit bored with it. I've put an aftermarket exhaust on it and an intake, but there's just something missing it doesn't have the soul of a German car. Anywho, so I'm looking to upgrade into an S5. My Budget is about $20k right but I'm ok waiting a bit longer if I have must, to find the right car, or they come down in price. I'm addicted to the sound of a V8, but I know that the 3.0's can make decent power w/ a few bolt ons. What's the consensus here? Do you guys like one over the other? Which engine is "less troublesome"? (Realizing that's a relative term here lol). I'd like to mod the car and get some more power out of it. Anyway, sorry for the noob questions. Hoping you guys will help an true OG out. Thanks!

I love my v8 but 20k you'd be getting one over 100k. I just bought my 09 with 75k for 24k. takes more money but a v8 can make more power than the v6 so it depends how much you want to sink in. lastly if looking for the v6 you either need an older cab or newer(2013+) s5. the b8.5's are selling low 30's for a decent one so out of the budget.

What kind of power are the V8's making with intake/exhaust/tune? I'm guessing LT headers and such are like $2k lol on these cars. Are there people going beyond full bolt-ons with the V8s?

no one makes headers for the v8. jhm has a super kit out that puts it at 450, apr supposedly is near 600 but performance is same. jhms kit is half the cost and upgradable, so once you intercool it and build internals you should get 700+ and be able to replace the vortech super with a bigger one if you want as they all supposedly bolt up the same.

JHM is the best example for the V8 S5, as they mainly focus solely on the V8's

I just bought my 2008 v8 S5 for $22k with 72k miles 2 months ago. I've dumped $7k into custom mods already and love the car. Get compliments daily.

I'm going to say, you could get very close to your 20k budget, as our cars have taken a huge hit in depreciation in the last month. There is glut of S5's coming off leases, and with the new model around the corner, prices have dropped. I was test driving some cars last month, and I was being offered 24K for my 09 S5, loaded, with all options except adaptive cruise, and a new clutch (June), brakes (march) Control arms (august).

I test drove some cars last week, and was stunned to be offered 18-21K. If you look for vehicles within 500 miles, you should be able to find something. My last three purchases were out of state, and all went well.

So, you might be able to get one at a slightly higher price than you want, but not much more. Heck, buy mine!!

He's right though...buy out of state and don't be scared. I bought mine from Maryland and I live in Florida. Just make sure inspections are done, CarFax looks good and service records are updated. Good luck on search

Or...I may sell you mine if you're willing to go higher in price for a mint v8 S5. 2010 Prestige loaded, with sport differential, and all the options except adaptive cruise control. It also has an AWE Track exhaust with the diamond black exhaust tips, and satin black powder coated OEM rotor wheels. The car was a CPO car and is as perfect as it gets for a 6 year old car with 59k miles. Perfectly maintained with regular oil changes and I just spent quite a bit in maintenance (new motor mounts, new front control arms/bushings, 55k service, dealer installed new clutch plus all clutch components such as flywheel/throwout-bearing at 42k miles, etc.).

Only reason I'm considering selling is that I just relocated to south Florida and I no longer need the car, as I have a company car on the way. I also don't have my garage or the time/ability to detail it as much as I like to, so I wouldn't mind finding it a new home. Let me know if you're flexible on funds, and I'll give you all the details.

I'd probably stop short of internals. just don't have the desire to go that nuts on a car these days. I've considered LSx swapping my M45 as well, I'd go internals on that for sure but...I'd feel bad tearing apart an S5 lol.

Tell me more about it. I'm partial to Black cars, so that's my preference.

One more question - are these V8's the same as the ones in the B6 S4's? Where basically the timing chain needs to be changed out at 100k miles or they self-destruct? Cam pos sensor issues? Any other big gotchas on these cars? To Be honest, I'd stepped away from german cars because of the maintenance issues but I'm hoping these cars aren't as troublesome. Plus, as much as I like my Infiniti M45, it's just not an Audi.

You can find a great V8 S5 for 20-25k, and you should. They are awesome and have plenty of power for the street. The 4.2 issues you sited were resolved when they built the B8 S5. It's Audi's NA V8 swan song.

It's much easier to get big power out of the V6. Whoever said V8's can make more power is technically correct, but it cost $14.5k for the APR supercharger and maybe half that for the JHM. I have no experience with either, but with all due respect, it sounds like either option is outside of your budget. They are certainly outside of mine. For a few grand you can get deep into the 400's with a supercharged V6 but then you'll have a supercharged V6. As much as we all like to talk about horsepower, most of us don't need more than OEM to put a big smile on our face. The V8 is in your budget, and with a nice exhaust you will fall in love. Yes, you will spend 2k on a full exhaust including installation (no headers, all the systems available are post manifold.) I have the AWE track on mine. I drive it daily even if I don't need to. When others play golf or turn on their playstation I go for a drive. Every time I hit the gas it sounds like God stubbed his toe on an a-bomb.

If you want smiles per miles buy the cheapest V8 you can find and throw on an exhaust, sway bars, and a used set of lightweight wheels.

    You're welcome.

I will definitely go full exhaust, intake, JHM tune and a few other go fast goodies, but I'd prefer to buy and enthusiast car with some mods already done.

I'm hoping and praying that just over 300 at the wheels, in a package as nice as the S5, will be enough, but yea...I'm not sure yet.

Agreed, those s/c's are out of my price range. I don't think I could ever go that route, even though at $7k, it's probably the most cost effective use of money. It's just a lot to drop in one shot.

You read me well, I'm addicted to that V8 sound...I don't care what make/model, as long as it sounds like a pissed off lion.

I've done a quick search and I may have to wait a bit. Most of the cars for sale within a few hundred miles are near 100k mile examples and poorly kept, yet they're still asking for 20-25k. I may need to wait a bit for an enthusiast owned car, with tasteful mods and sub 80k miles, to drop into that price-range.

So I've made the decision to stick to the V8 S5. Now that I'm set on that, is there anything I need to know about what options to get or to avoid? What years are better than others, obviously knowing that newer is better. Personally, I prefer manual, but is the auto decent? I commute to work so it's something I'll be considering as well.

In a nutshell, my car is a 2010 Meteor Gray Metallic (gorgeous color by the way), over black leather. It has all options except adaptive cruise control. Some of the most sought after include: B&O sound, Carbon Atlas interior trim, sport differential, 6 speed manual transmission, and OEM rotor wheels which I had professionally powder-coated in satin black. The car has never been in an accident and has never had any issues. 0 paint work of any kind (I put a paint meter to it when I went to inspect it before purchase). New OEM clutch installed by the dealer, including all supporting components such as a new flywheel, new master/slave cylinders, etc. when it had 42k miles. I also just had the engine mounts replaced with 034 mounts, and a few thousand miles ago all front control arms (upper and lower) as well as all associated bushings and ball joints were replaced. The 55k-mile service was also performed a little before the 55k mile mark. The car has an AWE track exhaust with diamond black tips installed, and I also put the OEM exhaust in storage, which is available. Besides the exhaust (which creates music to the ears), the car is stock and unmolested. It draws plenty of attention and I get compliments about the car constantly, anywhere I go.

Again, if interested, we can discuss a deal; however, it will not be $20k or anywhere near. Factoring in the condition, the relatively low miles for the age, the options, upgrades, and maintenance, this one is in the top percentile as far as B8 S5's go. I would hate to see it go, but my lifestyle change will make it difficult for me to enjoy the car as much as I used to.

This picture of my car is an excellent representation of the color. The wheels on this picture were the "peelers"; however, I replaced them with new "rotors" and had them powder coated the exact same finish, for reference.

As 4.too mentioned, you want the B8 (2010-2012). They fixed many of the serious issues found in the earlier V8 models. 2012 was the last year of the V8. The manual trans can be very hard to find, but I found one. To give you an idea, at the time I bought, there were only three other 2012 S5 MT advertised in all of the US. For 2010-2012, they will range from $20-40k depending on the mileage, condition, model year, and equipage.

    Good luck!

    Welcome to AZ!

This is really exciting news, there's a few other b5ers from back in the day on here.

You're going to love the b8, have you had a chance to test drive one yet?
