So today I got out of work early and decided to do this. Personally I love it. Its different then the other B8s in my area. I understand that not everyone will like it.

Well.........yes it looks cool.....but you just reduced your usable light output by how much????? Just don't plan on seeing as much at night any more with your reduced output, but...........it looks cool.

Might not be reduced as much as you think. The smoke doesn't appear to be that dark, and the projector was unaffected by the rest of the light being painted flat black. I wouldn't rock it just because it's a reason to get pulled over, but I think it looks nice!

Look at the new z71 Silverado. The headlights are the same way. I didn't lose any output as far as light. I also have 55w hid fogs. Light output in fantastic. But thanks guys

Took about 5 hours. It wasn't to hard, masking was kinda annoying. But I'm happy with it. Btw changing the turn signal bulb is a royal pita. And thank you

I like it! How much of a pain was it to take the headlight assy apart?

It is called the "Joey Mod" on VW Vortext. Was quite popular with the B4 Golf Jetta crowd a few years back.

    Looks good!

looks good, but personally i like the silver/chrome inside the headlight housing because it has a very nice detailed design in there and i like it when that shows. but i did darken my headlights as well, with a very light smoke tint film over them, it darkens it up just right but not enough to look too dark or affect the light output. but this wouldn't either i know, looks good though. i maybe would have left the outer lens as is since you were already darkening up the inside.

oh i see it now, it just looked dark and my screen brightness was dark too i thought you maybe smoked that. looks good though i think it would look great on a blacked out car. you can see mine in this walkaround i had of my car, but i just did a light smoke tint film on the outside, not brave enough to open up the headlights, but i do like how it's dark but still shows off the nice detailed design of the internals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwl-WJiF0SI

My outside lense is ceramic coated. So it's hard to take a picture of it. I will try to get better ones tomorrow

You didn't actually read or pay attention to the photos. Nothing he changed reduced the light output.

I wouldn't do this mod to my car, but it is the proper way to execute the 'dark' look. Tinting the outer lens is the wrong way and would reduce output.

Looks great. Did you use the oven method or a heat gun? Been wanting to do the j-code mod but don't want any moisture issues in the future.

I used a heat gun. When I put it back together. I let it cool to the touch. Then used black silicone filled the groove, let it get tacky. Then I installed the 6 metal clips. Any excess that was pushed out was smoothed around the outside. I washed my car today had no moisture issues.
