I recently took this Avant on trade for my Corrado.
Looking to get $19000
I had an amazing Corrado but it was time for something new. A local gentleman (roughly 55-60 years old) offered to trade me a 2000 Imola sedan 6 speed and a 2001 Imola Avant also in 6 speed. The avant unfortunately had a hurt turbo. I will explain the hurt turbo in a bit. I realized I was creating more work for myself not only in fixing the avant but also I have to sell two cars instead of one. But my weak B5 loving knees buckled and I took the offer.
The Imola Avant is a full stage 3 kit that was purchased from APR a few years ago and was professionally installed by a shop in Mesa, Az. At the time of install these following items were put in. (paperwork to go with) Roughly 40k miles at time of install.
Genuine BW k04's
OEM RS4 y pipe
OEM RS4 inlet pipes
OEM RS4 fuel injectors
OEM RS4 fuel pump
OEM RS4 air box w/ K&N drop in filter
OEM RS4 MAF
OEM RS4 accordion hose
OEM RS4 SMIC's
OEM RS4 Lobster claws
APR Bi Pipe
Evolution Racewerks DV's
Poly front Snub Mount
APR Downpipes
APR Full Exhaust (I think they use Borla Mufflers)
JHM short Shift trio
Spec Stage 3 clutch with LWFW
Alternator
To elaborate on the hurt turbo...
Sometime after the install and now, the old man was dealing with a 'turbo boost overspeed limit reached' fault and he car was going into limp mode. Instead of taking it to the shop that installed the turbos or any other reputable shop that knows these cars he took it to a small mom and pop shop up in Payson, Az where he lived. They attempted to fix it by throwing a N75 valve at it. WRONG... well in doing so when they reinstalled the accordion hose a small piece of the hose where it mates to the y pipe folded under and they tightened the hose clamp down. With THAT being said the piece of folding plastic managed to break off and get sucked in the drivers side turbo.
Fast forward to the car being completed. Drive the car for the first time was very exciting since it will be the lowest mileage S4 I've ever driven plus stage 3 !!! After a few miles of driving, I lifted the car to inspect everything... everything checked out. Time to lay into it ! Well getting into boost turn out to be a let down. One good pull and then limp mode. Scanned for faults and sure enough !!! the over boost limit reach fault was present. So I started by pressure testing the wastegate lines from the N75 to the gates. They did not hold. I ended up narrowing it down to finding a torn wastegate line on the passenger where it routed around the head. Now I did NOT touch these when I removed the turbos. I left all the wastegate lines, signal lines, oil and coolant lines intact. Then it hit me light a ton of bricks. The old man was running into this issue before. If the shop up in Payson would have diagnosed this boost issue properly these turbos would have lived a much much longer life.
So to sum it up His loss and my Labor and parts is all your gain. The car is back together and has roughly 400 miles on it since the motor went back in. No leaks, no smells, nothing ! spikes at 25 psi and tapers to 22. It's as good as new !
