    How many widebands?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys pretty simple question. In your honest opinion, should I go with 1 or 2 wideband sensors. Obviously I know many people get by just fine with 1. But thinking about it getting 2 seems like a good idea. From my point of thinking (free to correct me if I'm wrong)

Pros: ability to monitor both banks allowing more accurate logs and thus better tune-ability.

Cons: double cost (unless someone makes a double kit)
And more gauge clutter/ more dash space being used.

Thanks in advance, i look forward to hearing what you guys have to say.

its late, so someone correct me if I am wrong, but the passenger bank would be more prone to run lean by design. As a result, if you are just monitoring the passenger bank to protect against running lean underboost that would be sufficient for the majority of users and builds on this platform for use in tuning (in combination with all the other factory provided datapoints). You could also add individual cylinder EGT sensors or widebands to each cylinder if you really wanted to with some fabbing and the right tools:

Then the question becomes.... do you need it? What is your build, what limit are you trying to push, etc etc. For a majority of users, its over kill to go this far, to extract every bit of final data, as most will not be in a position to utilize it anyway. So unless your build is something extreme, I would recommend one in the passenger bank.

There are companies that do offer dual setups, for example:

The Pro can be accomplished with a bung on each DP and manually swapping the single sensor between sides.

I have the equipment to run two sensors simultaneously in each DP but I have yet to be in a situation where I felt doing so would be worthwhile.

Why is bank 2 more prone to run lean? What design issue are you speaking of here?

Actually I believe the passenger bank is actually bank 1. And from what I understand on the 2.7t's bank 1 does seem to run more lean.

Thank you very much for the clarification. I may look into the dual kit. But honestly I'm just looking to set up wideband in general cause I want to start tuning my stage 3 instead of paying someone else to do it. I've been going through the nefmoto site and the s4 tuning wiki doing a bunch of research. (I've only scratched the surface, but still trying haha) but I think you're right and I'll probably be sufficient with just a bank 1 sensor.

You're right and I knew that, brain fart. But why does it run lean?

/\ Not entirely sure, I have just heard this piece of information regurgitated on the B5S4 platform. I always assumed it had something to do with the placement of the fuel regulator, return and feed lines. And also assumed it wasn't that the passenger side did in fact run lean, but rather if one bank were to run lean due to fuel starvation the passenger bank would be the first affected.

Although my thoughts on that are all purely assumptions, and you know what they say about those:

No reason to get two. But would be helpful in diagnosing exhaust leaks/primary oxygen sensor issues.
