Agreed to 2010 S4 Prestige, 41K Miles - Can Transfer warranty - should I do it?

Hey Guys,

So if you saw my earlier thread, I was looking very hard at B8 S4s, but with my budget, a lot of them were suspect. Well, I found the one below, and we have come to an agreement. It was super clean, unmodified, and when I met the guy, he seemed like a good dude.

I'm currently awaiting the loan check to send onto him before I can proceed with DMV nightmares of getting the car home, but in the meantime, he has offered to transfer his warranty over to me for some compensation.

He purchased the warranty for $4,000 when he became the second owner of the car. The warranty is good up until Feb 2018 or 78,000 miles, meaning he can also get reimbursed for about 36% of his purchase price. I could transfer the remainder of the warranty with the car for a $40 transfer fee to the warranty company, and then about $1,400 to him to make him whole for what he would have received.

My question is: Do you think I would have $1,400 worth of expenses over the next 16 months and 25,000 miles? He has the platinum plan, which includes all of the other plans I have screenshotted below.

I say do it - I had a 2010 that I took to APR STG II+ now I will add this: At that time there was no DSG tune - after stage II, I cracked 2 engine mounts (about $2200) of parts and labor out of my pocket as I had zero warranty. Then I started to get the red cog of death in the dash (again at that time there was no DSG/APR tune)(higher heat in the transmission/metal flakes/increased torque(APR sorted ALOT of this w/the DSG tune) so we were looking at a Mechatronic and Clutch Pack .... this is not cheap when the vehicle is out of warranty and yes it would exceed $1400 (what your going to pay for current extended warranty)

Was the car tuned? Was it or had it had recall / repair for the Mechatronic or DSG transmision

You pay to play - but warranty will soften that financial blow - high end cars are not cheap when it comes time to fix stuff...even if you get a screaming deal this is a cost of ownership you should think long and hard on my friend...It was like my 1st M5 that I got for a great deal....then the SMG was having issues...pay to play(and that's all I will say there) & not beat the horse

Get as much info as you can and records on the vehicle and previous owners (one previous owner is not bad...re-assess if there has been multiple previous owners) tell tale sigh what is a steal of a deal for you = there have been some previous "issues" and you will now be on the hook to correct them.

It can be and so far seems to be a good deal for you - but do your homework/research - do it... Then Enjoy the heck out of it!

And I forgot to add - simple rule of thumb as you crunch those numbers thinking what your car payment (if you finance). For every $1000 bucks you roll back in on the deal - car payment will adjust about $20 bucks (same goes for money you put down... per $1000 down your payment will decrease about $20) See how simple that is - so is it really a no brainier to transfer the warranty and have peace of mind? Yes, it will be the best money you spend on your new whip

Well the car is a 6MT, so the clutch is already excluded from the warranty. Also, they have pretty serious sounding exclusions in there for issues related to modifications to the car, so I'm not sure how easily I could file a claim for cracked engine mounts after doing a significant updgrade. The only thing I think that would help in that situation is I'm too far to bring it to that actual dealer, so I would go private shop and then submit for reimbursement. They may be able to help me out there.

Ah 6MT - ok different story and looks like you have it sorted. Have or make a friend w/a mechanic at a Audi place yet? Please do if you can... so they can do a once over - if your on the fence pay to have a independent Audi / German car mechanic give it a once over...should be a few hundred bucks

And you got your smart shopper cap on - ask questions - what if scenario... about anything your not clear on in the warranty.

Besides, you can tune it (but another cost factor of ownership) will my tuner flash back to stock/re-flash or will there be a cost? You can factor that as well, and still get repairs done "under warranty" ;)

He already confirmed he can get refunded for 36% of the $4,000 he bought it for, so that's what he's looking for from me.

Honestly, you might be better off taking $1,400 and putting it into an account. In 16 months you probably won't have anything break that hasn't already been addressed (aside from the thermostat [if not already replaced] which is about $1,000 at the dealer). So, even if the thermostat goes, you're still ahead by $400. These cars are very reliable, especially in 6MT form.

Just make sure you take it to a shop to give it a once-over in case there are any items that need immediate replacing.

Agreed. There seems to only be a handful of issues that commonly plague these cars, most of which can be DSG or modification related. If the car checks out then id say no worries on the warranty, however it does provide some piece of mind. But also these "warranty" companies are just as shady as insurance companies. If they can get out of payment on a loophole or technicality hidden in their TOS, they will screw you over.

As this is a known issue - and yours have not been replaced
There is a TSB/Recall for the thermostat .... get as much done to the vehicle prior to you taking delivery

Probably at least $ 600-800 at Indy shop, $ 1200 on up at dealer.

As this is a known issue - and yours have not been replaced
There is a TSB/Recall for the thermostat .... get as much done to the vehicle prior to you taking delivery

Agreed. If it's a recall vs. a TSB, you should be able to get it covered by the dealership. Ensure it's a recall.
