Interesting discovery related to high oil consumption

I bought a 2005 S4 Dolphin Gray Cab in January with 78,000 miles

I love my S4, but they sure are maintenance hungry. One of the more interesting problems that I got was a low oil light on within 500-1000 miles every time, sometimes a lot less. Eventually, a red flashing "Low Oil Pressure" light came on to warn me of my engine's near-death. Then it went off. Then back on. Then off. All in the matter of seconds. Keeping the oil topped off sometimes kept red oil pressure light away, but it always came back very quickly, and interestingly as well, restarting the engine sent the light away until i started driving. Or so I thought, when trying to determine was was triggering this low oil pressure light when finally resolving the issue, I found that it went off everytime the car accelerated to 2200rpm or higher, and would usually stay on at the point. Decided it was time to pull the sensor and replace it. $7 later on a VW/Audi oil pressure sensor from ebay, i pull off the old sensor to find it covered in oil and disgusting. Replace it, boom, car fixed, runs fine. Now, nearly 10k miles later, i have added a quart of oil to my car maybe 2 times over those 10k miles. I figured my engine was almost gone from cylinder scoring but now I'm hopeful I might have a survivor.

    Sensor replaced: 82500
    Current Mileage: 91005.

    Moral of the story:
The oil pressure sensor can leak very significant amounts of oil, therefore making it seem that your engines are burning more oil than they actually are. This part is worth glancing at/replacing to help reduce oil loss on all high mileage high oil consuming engines.

Was the oil actually low when you added some to make the light go away? Are you saying that sensor lowered your oil consumption? Just trying to understand cause I'd love to solve mine burning a qt/1200 mi. Thanks

replacing a sensor is NOT going to fix oil consumption issues. you had a failing sensor, thats one separate issue. If you are adding 2 quarts of oil in 10k miles, you still have oil consumption.

this post makes no sense in regards to oil consumption. Are you sure the sensor wasn't dripping oil or something of that nature. again there is no way the OPS will cause you to consume that much oil

This is exactly what I'm saying. I'm sorry for the improper wording it seems but don't all gang up on me here because I dont have a miracle solution for you. All i am saying is that YOUR OPS may be leaking oil, contributing to your overall engine's consumption. This was what was going on in my case, and I am saying it is a very cheap very easy service that *may* reduce your oil consumption as well. Sorry for trying to help everyone!

Yes, exactly. the sensor itself was the source of nearly all of my engine's oil consumption because it was leaking oil out of it very rapidly, but the oil only leaked while the engine is running so i never noticed any puddles anywhere from this.

theres probably a giant puddle on your transmission or the exhaust is burning it up. it did leak when the car was off because theres not pressure at the switch and the oil goes back in the pan
