    Boost leak or blown turbo?

Be never had boost problems so I'm a little nervous right now. Stage 1 2001.5 6 speed with 138k. Was just tuned about 2 weeks ago, and replaced the EGT sensor last night. Took it for a drive and now whenever the car hits 4k ish under heavy throttle there is a loud whistle/rushing air sound. It sounds like it is coming from the drivers side from underneath the car. There is barely any power to the car at this point, the tach stays at about 4300rpm with the same amount of throttle. I don't have a gauge so I can't examine my boost levels but I do believe it builds boost up to at least 3k. I know the pressure tester comments are ensuing, and I'm working on that. I'm just looking to see if anybody has had similar issues or could give me another place to start before the pressure tester. I'm only skeptical of a blown turbo because I believe I'm still on factory k03's. Car wasn't pushed by previous owner but I didn't get a stack of maintenance records (shame on me I know). So somebody tell me, how screwed am I?

Check your intercooler hoses, dv's, tbb, or anywhere else the boost goes. A boost leak tester, boost gauge, and vag com should be your first investments after buying one of these cars. You can get the cable cheap on ebay

I'm betting you have a boost leak.

My money is on a torn throttle body boot. Happens to all the 15 year old boots when they first see double the pressure they were designed to hold.

I had a loud whistle from one of my intercooler hoses awhile back. I thought one of my new turbos were bad, but a boost leak test exposed the sound. Tightened the clamps and good to go!

Boost leak test should definitely be your first step.

I checked the TBB when I had my EGT issue and it was fine then, but still a place I should look. CJ that sounds like that could be my culprit. Anybody have a preference on testers? Any good diy testers for the 2.7t?

Here is essentially what I made:

However I epoxied a 3/8" hose barb on the top instead and used a regular air blower nozzle tee'd to a gauge and extra 3/8 tubing I had laying around.

I'd also put money on boost leak.

I'd go ahead and replace the tbb with an aftermarket option. Either apr bipipes (if you can find them) or 034 silicone option or the like. Then I'd check the dv hoses. Are you on factory dv's? If so I'd go ahead and get 710n's or any of the piston style dv's. This will save you headaches later on, if not now.

I've built a boost tester but never used it. Normally boost leaks are in the forementioned areas covered by everyone. Have been in my case (tbb, ic hoses).

Original DV's yes. I have planned on doing the 034 tbb and 710n fairly soon, just waiting for some extra cash to accrue. The dv hoses look good I checked on those when I had my y pipe off yesterday. I ordered the 2.7 tester from the link above for a saved headache of making one and possibly screwing it up. From the location of the sound I'm almost willing to bet on ic hoses, but I won't know til I receive my tester.

My loose intercooler hose sounded like this my thread and video.

You could probably feel some of the hoses from underneath.

Why didn't you just go to lowes and make a tester for a couple bucks?
