Interesting day at the track - help please

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ran again today at York Raceway hoping for some good runs.
But good old British weather prevailed.
Rain, mug (humidity) and more rain

Car: 2016 Audi S6 Avant (Wagon) + Revo Stage 1 tune

    Temps: 19-20 degrees

    Humidity: 99%
    Air Pressure: 1010 hPA

(sorry can't get DA calculator to work)

But I got 6 runs in.

To recap my first time at the track I ran 11.85 @ 114.5mph with a 1.76 60ft i believe it was
    1/8 ET: 7.5 @ 91MPH

    Run #1

    60ft - 1.966
    1/8 ET: 7.88 @ 90.18MPH
    1/4: 12.18 @ 114.83

Couldn't get the tyres to hook, only a few cars had run and it was very slippy loads of wheel spin yet again :-( bummer

So i let some air out of the tyres to about 35-37

Run #2 run 50 mins later

    60ft - 2.08
    1/8 ET: 8.03 @ 90.87MPH
    1/4: 12.30 @ 116.26

Shitty wheelspin through second and 3rd, swerved all over the place was a bit crazy i almost bottled it.
But once I got the power down it started to rocket away.
Best ever trap speed 116 - hmmm! But my 1/7 is half a second down

    Run #3
    60ft - 1.92
    1/8 ET: 7.79 @ 91.28 MPH
    1/4: 12.06 @ 113.87

I left of the gas too early hense the drop in trap speed (what an idiot)

    Run #4
Let more air out as i just can't hook the tyres up at all 2nd through 3rd just not happening, tyres down to 32 psi ish
    60ft - 1.967
0-60mph - 3.69 seconds (not too shabby with wheel spin still)
    1/8 ET: 7.70 @ 92.44MPH
    1/4: 11.93 @ 115.39

    Run #5
Decided to drop the tyre pressure even more to around 27psi, everyone on the track kept saying your back wheels are spinning way to much lower your tyre pressure more so i did.

60ft - 1.87 (coming down a bit but still high)
    0-60mph - 3.62 seconds
    1/8 ET: 7.60 @ 92 MPH
    1/4: 11.93 @ 114.47

Car moved all over the track ill try and get some videos to show. It was unsettling not feeling in control completely.

    Run #6 immediately afterward

    60ft - 1.87
    0-60mph - 3.7 seconds
    1/8 ET: 7.72 @ 91.2 MPH
    1/4: 12.04 @ 106.88 MPH (That's not a typo)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-vG...ature=youtu.be

So i have definitely got the video for this but from inside the car. With the tyres started to hook up a bit better but still very squirrely i wanted to get another one in as the rain was coming in a bit now (and the last run)
I raced this nutty shit box Vauxhall Corsa these cool guys had just build it, fully stripped running over 480bhp with drag slicks and running 11.7's.
I really didn't want to be humiliated but i was running him and had no choice on the matter.
He set off just before me as you see in the video but then i start to gain on him, you can see me about to catch him and would have over taken I'm sure but I lost all power before the end. It was my strongest run of the day i felt. The car was running really really strong boost came on hard. Then I got a check engine light and power died. That's why i finished on a 106mph but still ran a 12 dead. I can't work out what this would have been if i hadn't have lost 9-10mph at the end but it felt like an 11.6 it was strong.
Before i got to the turn off in fact as soon as i braked the light went off of its own accord. Power returned.

I should mention i had drained the tank i started with 35-40 miles left and did 6 runs. I check the fault codes which were engine cylinder 5+6 misfire and 'FUEL LEVEL TOO LOW' error. I wonder and some else suggested this that maybe i ran it too low and wasn't enough fuel available or maybe it was splashing around at the back of the tank then when i braked it shot forward and the error corrected itself.

    Any ideas guys?

I have run 4 diagnostic tests afterwards and its 100% clear right now, car sounds and running really strong.

So overall i aimed to beat by time and came close to matching it but the conditions weren't great and i just couldn't get the power down as well as id hoped.
I did my best with the little experience and knowledge i had but it wasnt enough but i did have a lot of fun.

Worth mentioning a lot of cars struggled today including a 2013 R35 with Litchfield Stage 1 tune who managed a best time of the day of 11.7 @ 122mph but was in the 12s with me for the first 2 races. A45 AMG running mid 13s and above, Golf R 7 running 14s

So at one point my car was faster than a stage 1 R35 ;-) (dont try taking that away from me)

All videos i have right now

The low fuel theory sounds right to me. I've had the misfire codes pop up while running and the car will go limp as if it hit a wall. Car would get over it quickly and there would be no lingering problem. Your misfires may be related to low fuel. Were you running normal pump gas (98 RON?)? Not sure why you ran so low on fuel, but of course it's not necessary.

Thanks Chris it was tumbleweeds before you showed up. I just wanted to have less weight as mine is the avant so I have that disadvantaged already. It was a stupid idea and yes pump gas. No problems since fingers crossed. Got any tips for getting off the line I really struggled yesterday

Thanks for posting here. I'm not sure you can improve traction much on a super humid day like that one. I've had bad luck as well. Even if the track is well prepped (and maybe it wasn't), there will be condensation on the pavement. So I would say just to avoid track days like that, try to avoid driving through the water in the burnout pits, and do a test launch before you stage to clean off the tires a bit. Play with the suspension settings too, if you can (i.e., dynamic versus comfort).

Gas only weighs about 6lbs per gallon. You're not going to notice a difference from carrying a few extra gallons.

Ah cheers for that advice mate. Yeah it wasn't a good day for running but I wanted to try and I don't get many chances. Pretty pleased I got in the 11s in such bad conditions and not far off that R35 is some consolation.
I should have tried without launch. They don't have a waterbox at that track it's pretty basic and old

Yes, seems you ran low on fuel. As was mentioned, no real need to run it that low...

As for launch, if it's damp, just launch with a quick progressive stomp on the gas from idle. I get wheelspin in the DRY with my STOCK S6 if track conditions aren't just right, so I'd imagine your car would be much worse since it's tuned.

Also, hit the gas just after the 3rd yellow illuminates to improve your reaction time. When you've dialed that in, few cars are going to beat you to the end of the track.

Finally, foot to the floor all the way past the finish line, unless you're worried you can't stop.

Thanks Zcd2.t I'm new to all this track stuff so all advice is most welcomed. I'm relieved the car is fine no codes no faults it's just running strong. I wish I had got someone to record the runs to show how bad the track was. Can you run a bit of e85 on our cars? I know that vol4t guy did

Based on when I the power died and still ran a 12 dead at 106mph what do you think I would have run if I hadn't lost power? 11.60,-11.70

Yes, you can run some E85. I think Vol ran a 50/50 mix, but to be conservative you might go with 30%-40%. If you're getting full ignition timing it might not help any, but I don't see the harm of doing this occasionally.

As for what you would have run, who knows? It looks like you had your problem after the 1/8 mile marker, and your 1/8 time of 7.72 put you on track for another 11.9. You get to write your own narrative on that one. Time is harder to make up on the big end (where you are accelerating less anyway).

Cheers Chris good to know I might give it a try next time.
Id like to think I would have at least done an, 11.8 but I get what your saying. Ilk go when the it's better conditions and try again
