What is this thing and do I have to replace it?

What is this? And if I see oil in it, and it's old, should I replace it?
    Thanks in advance

    I love my s4 avant 2001.

Pancake valve I think it's part of the pcv system and cannot be replaced as an individual piece I think. Someone should chime in.

Oil in there is normal. If the PCV hose is not cracked and leaking and the check valve is good, move on to some other piece of maintenance such as...your duct taped together check valve

Actually the one for the 1.8t can be put on it since it's sold individually. I have not done it but I'm planning to.
