Hello from Europe. Audi B5 1.8T Quattro

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello everyone, my name is Karlo. I come all the way from Croatia, Europe. My daily driver and a future project car is a 1996 B5 1.8 Turbo Quattro with AEB head. The car itself is a Pre-Facelift model which will be eventually transformed to FL. Now it's got Facelift headlights and tail-lights+front bumper but it's only a start. A plan is to go for an S4 look and increase in power to about 350 HP but due to poor financial situation it'll have to wait for a few years.

    -Manual tranny
-Sport seats, combination of cloth and leather.
    -AEB Head, KO3 turbine.
    -No cat, sport exhaust
    -Cruise control
    -remote start system and more

    Here are some pics:

Thank you! It's a custom paint job, the color is "more black" than factory one, has a deeper shine also. Here's a pic of reflection:

You have a 96 but the cluster is a face lift version. Am I missing something here?

I love the color. If your on a budget I would rethink the goals so you don't have to open the engine or upgrade the clutch. A solid 250awhp setup is a lot of fun and faster then a lot of other cars.

I got the first one in the picture. It matches the year :)

Thank you! For 250 i will need a ko4 turbine + chip. Anything else? Do i have to upgrade the IC for that setup?

Well, today my ICM module crapped on me... New one is 120 euros here and that's the cheapest option.... I was thinking about upgrading the coils to 2.0 tfsi ones and full deletion of icm module. What would the cost be?

    Hey :)

It's a Pioneer MVH-X560BT paired over bluetooth with Sony Xperia Z2 tablet :)

Unfortunately, the tablet screen has been broken for quite a while now. I currently don't have money for a new screen. I was hoping it would be cheaper because I would replace it by myself but original screens are around 90 USD so it's out of the question for now. Winning lottery would help quite a bit :D

    Lovely car!

I would say one thing though - your painted valve cover...I would be wary about paint in the area the oil filler cap goes over, that is effectively washed by oil...

Usually, that area should not be painted, as paint can play havoc with your oil pick-up screen...

You mean the part where an oil cap sits on the valve cover?

Yes, there is a gasket on the bottom of the oil cap that should see bare metal, no paint like mine

I'm alive It's been a while, i know.. I was entirely focused on my college, so nothing major was done to the car over the academic year. Summer break is here so 2 weeks ago, I did some engine work. Nothing major happened and the car is/was reliable the whole time but it was burning oil and smoking heavily from the exhaust which is a shame in my head because there isn't many TQ Sports in my country and I want my car to set the example of a great find, not a shitty smoke machine, so i started with the repair. Basically, timing belt, water pump, t-stat, cts, pulleys, serpentine belts, etc. were done last year so i didn't change them. I suspected the reason for burning oil were bad valve stem seals and i was right (luckily). Piston rings were in good condition and i could see "honeing pattern" on the cylinder walls (45 degrees) so i didn't touch the engine block. While i was at it, i polished all of the intake and exhaust ports, and compression chamber also. Did the valves and valve seals, cleaned and polished piston heads etc... Intake and exhaust ports were literally fu*ked by carbon deposits as well as piston heads. Pictures follow. Anyways, car is running great now, and the exhaust note changed a bit so now it's to my liking :)))

Those pistons look great! How did you clean the carbon so effectively? Did you just bring each piston to TDC and start scrubbing?

Yes, one by one. I used sanding paper (600 for removing carbon and 1200 for polishing) and some WD-40 for several reasons. Lubrication, catching dirt and metal shavings and it helps with dissolving carbon. If you plan on doing this, after the scrubing you should thoroughly wipe down the cylinder wall multiple times just to be sure no dirt or shavings are left because it could probably scratch cylinder walls to the point you will need to bore your block. I'm not sure this could happen but better be safe than sorry :)
