Do Service When? Time or Mileage?

Hi all,

So my car right now is driven lightly due to short commute. As a result, my 15k service won't be for a while. The 5k service was done at the beginning of the year, so should I do my 15k service a few thousand miles earlier or just wait until 15k?

I wouldnt wait the 10k miles that audi suggusts to begin with. Change oil every 5-7k miles.

Its a combination. Both mileage and time to take under consideration. I'd have service done at least annually.

I have the same issue, I just went with audicare 15k at 12,500 and did just the oil change at 19,000 then the audicare 25,000. I will have the 35,000 done at 32,500 just before the warranty in December is out, encase they mess something up and try to change me to fix it.

You will have to go annually with Audicare anyways. I just went for my 25k at 16k on the clock now. I only put about 7k miles a year so I get my oil changed at a good Indy shop near me every 6 months in between my annual Audi service.

I drive an S5 and I am in a similar situation as you when it comes to yearly mileage. Actually, even worse. I just walk to work nowadays because work is that close to home. My annual mileage is now down to 6,000 kms (3,800 miles). I just purchased Audi Care because I plan to go through the scheduled maintenance items annually regardless of mileage. Even if I do just regular oil changes at Audi every year, it will cost close to the price of Audi Care by the end of year #5 (the first year being free) especially if you add in the S-Tronic tranny flush/fill service. I know that doing oil changes at an indy shop will be cheaper but I do not want to go through an eye of a needle with Audi in case I need to have warranty work done on my car.

When I owned a 2011 VW GTI, I drive a similar mileage too. I just did my yearly oil change, brake fluid flush/fill every two years, DSG oil change on a time schedule. The major and minor services (mostly checks anyway), I do based on mileage. I never had any problems claiming any warranty work because the VW dealer knew my car well even it I only did annual oil changes and the other time-sensitive fluid changes. But, I have heard Audi to be quite strict when it comes to the maintenance and service schedules. With the price of Audi parts and labour, I do not want to risk running into problems with Audi. This is the reason why I changed my service and maintenance routine for my S5.

Right. And now from what I have read, AudiCare expires 5 years from original in-service date. This is something else to consider as well. AudiCare Select can help, but that starts at 35k services and up. What to do with the 25k service, then? Pay out of pocket?

I see your point. I should've read your sig to figure out your S4's model year. Audi Care will not work for you any longer. My advice is to have annual oil change until you reach your 15k service. If you have just done an oil change and you're near the 15K service, do the 15k service after a year so you get another oil change along with the other 15k items. It does not matter if you do your 15k service a bit after you hit 15k. With the way you accumulate mileage, it won't make that much of a difference.

When I first thought about this, my mental math goofed and I thought I only had until next summer to get all services used, but actually I'm good until 2019. I'm halfway into the AudiCare 5 year timeline.

If you just go through the dealer and do not do the 15k AudiCare service, you're saying strictly oil change or should I assume tire balance as well? How much does the dealer charge (yes, I realize probably too much)?

Miles or time whichever comes first as how I have always done it and I am always WAY under miles. They just do the "next" service based on time in my world.

Went to the dealer this morning and I'm at the year long mark. 15k service it is today, but not too far off. Currently just over 13k.

Change oil at least once per year. Just did 2 year service (15 K) bought audi care at that service $849 & tax. They changed oil $ filter, ($150, cabin filter $95 ( rip off) brake fluid flush $169 . Audi car will pay for 3 more oil changes , one more cabin filter, one more brake flush AND DSG service at least $600 ! Service will be done on yearly basis. Total cost would be about $1720 & tax. My cost $849 & tax $909. If I were not getting audi car I would have done cabin filter my self , $20 for filter on Amazon . I will change wiper blades my self ,NOT COVERED by audi car. Wiper blades are $25 on Amazon . I do not know dealer price, but I know it is very very high. Audi care is a value just because of the DSG service

Not sure if it is different from Canada and the US or B8/B8.5 but my AudiCare expires after 3 years from first service date I believe. Will have to double check that tonight though. If it is five years then sweeeeeeeet deal.

Fellow Canadian here. My Audi Care expires 5 years after in-service date. Not 3 years.
