    8 Speed Transmission Annoyance

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've noticed a rather big annoyance with my 8 speed transmission, lately. I've had the experience of occasionally pulling out into traffic in my A4 and almost getting run over. Why? Because when I went out into traffic my transmission was in 2nd gear, not 1st gear. There is almost no power for maybe 6 or 7 seconds until the rpms build and then it goes as expected. It took some experimentation to figure out what is going on. I've figured out that the transmission won't downshift into first gear until the speedo reads 0 and I am at a dead stop. It does this when in Drive as well as Sport Mode. So, when I pull up to an intersection and I'm barely rolling and I notice that there is a hole just big enough for me to get out there and go - no power. I'm basically just rolling out into traffic. And, it stays this way until I either just about floor the accelerator and it finally downshifts into 1st gear and takes off like a bat out of hell or I've built up enough rpms to get into the power in 2nd gear.

I've had a lot of auto trans cars in my life and never had a transmission that would not downshift into 1st gear until the car was at a dead stop. Everything I've ever driven would downshift into 1st way before a dead stop.

Does anyone else also experience this or does my transmission have an issue (it drives just fine other than this issue)?

I'd try a throttle reset. I can't remember exactly how it's done, but a search will get you there

I doubt it's your transmission that has any problem. All the 8-speeds do not shift into 1st until you come to a complete stop.

Try driving in S-mode. But still, the car should have enough power from a roll, in 2nd gear, to safely pull out into traffic and get going. It sounds like your car is sluggish at low RPMs. Could be a turbo problem (wastegate leaking), or something else?

First of all ever 8 speed does not go into first automatically unless it's basically stopped. Mine included. Second, the trans is 8 speeds.... 8. Second gear is shorter than first gear of most cars... It should have zero issue pulling itself up but the boot straps and moving out quickly in second from a roll. Do a full adaption in VCDS of the trans and see if it helps... But what you're describing sounds normal. But the lack of power doesn't

As mentioned above, it wont get to first gear without coming to complete stop. It's the same reason you don't shift to first in a manual transmission unless stopped. Contrary to your accounts, I've never had driven an automatic that did shift to first before coming completely stopped.

But taking 7 seconds to gather power is not right either. 2nd gear, 3rd gear, 4th gear, and 5th gear are all shorter than 1:1. You shouldn't have any problem accelerating out of second or third in almost any scenario. I notice you're also E85 tuned as well... getting out the way should be the last of your problems.

I don't really get the lag that you're experiencing. If I'm at a slow roll and accelerate even a little, I'm scooting right along. It was that way even stock. I'd say you have something else wrong like the waste gate or DV bleeding off boost.

I've experienced the same issue. Using the Ross-Tech cable I've reset the Transmission Adaptions and its corrected the issue encountered. These trans have a memory of how you drive. Drive conservatively and I says "hey grandma" problem is when you need that GTF outta my way it hesitates a bit. I drive my car like stole it and at no point I time do I ever have to say now, why the F won't you go. This is just my experience

Yup, I have the same issue in my 2014. I don't have a 6-7 second delay as you noted, but there's a small amount of time till I get the power I want to move the car along. I find that shifting into sport mode helps. Thought it was just my car. Good to know they all do it. I think :)

This was one of my major complaints when I first got my allroad. I felt the car was unsafe to drive due to this behavior of the car. However the issue was gone after getting a performance tune. The first tune was through Stasis (now defunct). I then changed to APR when the E85 tune was released. Now I'm running a K04. In all cases, the tune resolves the hesitation issue.
