    Burning too much oil

    Hello All,

I have a 2010 Audi A4 FWD that I purchased 8 months ago. Since I got it, I noticed that it is burning a lot of oil. The first time the "low engine oil" light came on, I didn't think much of it. I thought the oil was just low and not that there could be a bigger issue. After I topped it off, it lasted a while before it came back on. Finally, it happened a third time. At that point, I started to monitor how soon the light would come on.

After keeping an eye on it for the last few months (I don't drive the car often), I was able to gauge that it burns a quart of oil every 1,2xx miles. The light comes on saying it's 1 quart low or that I need to add a quart of oil. Last time I topped it off, the mileage on the odometer read 65,551. When the light came on after noting the mileage, it read 66,829. I've ran this check 3 times and all read at about 1,2xx when the low oil indicator comes on after adding that missing quart. I have changed the oil 3 times already and using 0-40w European formula from Mobil 1.

What could be the issue? I do notice that my muffler tip and bumper are black due to exhaust deposits. However, the car doesn't really smoke, though....at least not anything noticeable.

Take it to the nearest Audi dealer for oil consumption test. If it fails stage 1 test they reprogram and replace pcv valve. If it continues to burn oil, request a stage 2 oil consumption test. If it fails stage 2 then they replace piston rings.

Unfortunately the 2 liter motors (earlier than 2013 IIRC) have oil burning issues, but Audi should fix it. I believe that their cutoff for excessive oil consumption is 1 quart every 1000 miles though...

Thanks for your response. When you say that "their cutoff for oil consumption is 1k" do you mean that if my car kills 1 quart of oil higher than 1k (1,2xx in my case) they won't fix it? Is this a recall thing or something?

Another question, if it fails stage 1 or 2, do they apply the fix in either case at no charge? I can only imagine how expansive replacing piston rings would be

Link, please? I did not find this MEGA thread you mentioned. I understand that you may be frustrated that you feel like either I didn't search or that others that posted aren't aware but it would be nice if you actually contributed by actually pointing out where this thread is instead of adding a pointless response just to get your post count up.

Your response is the very exact reason why people get turned off asking for help.

Just to get my post count up? That's cute.

http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...umption-Thread This thread is top front and center sticky on the main b8 a4 page.

If all you did was type "b8 oil consumtion" into ANY search engine on the face of this planet it is the first link at the top of the page.

But again, I'm just getting my post count up....

FWIW - doesn't seem like Tapatalk shows stickies. With that said, I could not see the sticky. If I were you, I would have at least said, "It's a sticky on the B8 A4 sub-forum for future reference but here is the link". Instead, you inconspicuously called us morons instead of being helpful. It took you two posts to be helpful.

Either way, I appreciate you pointing me to the right thread. It def answers my question and it was helpful.
