PNW Car Meet Ricer Rant

This rant isnt really going to make a difference but this pissed me off tonight.

So after moving to the PNW I decided to go to a local car meet up to meet some people with similar interests. I know these things tend to be kids with civics, but it was Friday night and I had nothing better to do.

When I got there I went straight over to a group huddled around a B5 S4. When I started talking to the clown who owned the car, it really made me sad for how far the once mighty B5 S4 has fallen. I half expected him to tell me it's got 900hp on stock turbos and supercharged at the same time, because you know....race car. Instead he tells me how slow this car is, and that his wife's A3 is way faster. That he is at 300whp pushing 25 psi. When i asked him how he is running such high boost levels he told me with upgraded coils and spark plugs. WTF???

He then starts to list off vague upgrades like "some internal things, hoses, cylinder heads (yes "heads" as in plural, meaning more than 1).

When I asked about a built head since he mention "Internal stuff" I get "stock rods are actually stronger than aftermarket." ahhhhh Why do people have to do this? I really wanted to take his keys and throw them into the ocean to rid the community of this cancerous mole. We all love Audis and car in general, why lie to me about it? I should've called him on it but being a newcomer there I opted not to. That will be the first and last time I go to any Non-Audizine meets.

We at 206 Audi will be more than happy to take you in. There's a regular bi-weekly meet at Buffalo Wild wings in Tukwila, then typically an off-week meet wherever the first person to post one decides. Then there's impromptu meets, and the banter on the Facebook page.

Everyone knows what they have, be it stock or not, and no one tries to BS everyone else. At least not about their cars.

I'm almost positive I know who you're talking about, and he's actually in the 2zero6 facebook group lol. I've never met him in person, but he's talked about his wife's A3 and his S4 a couple times. He's up there in the Bellingham area too.

It made me sad that those cars will likely not get the TLC that they deserve. Will likely be parts cars sooner rather than later. If he's actually running that much power, which I doubt, on a stock motor it's going to implode on him. He's also considering a $5k wrap over a tune for his mystical 25psi turbo. Priorities....

I also recently had a similar experience here in Portland. Went to a generic car meet late on a saturday night and the amount of BS being slung around was insanely high. It's those damn kids I tell ya.

ill never go to a meet thats not setup by an AZ member. too many clowns out there.

the first one i went to was the leavenworth drive this year -- totally worth it.
the park and ride meet up alone was worth it.

im also at the redmond meet every weekend. check it out if youre up for exotics.

the mod i have on my car and get the most compliments from are the red stitchings i did myself lol.

This is what happens when "fast" luxury sporty cars drop to sub-$10k in price. Any joker can buy one and he thinks that because it's so much faster and nicer than the Civic/Corolla/Scion/240 he used to drive that he's suddenly this race-winning panty-dropper and he can still BS everyone - but true Audi enthusiasts can't be fooled unlike his previous 18 y/o ignorant Honda friends. But when it comes to quality mods and actual repairs and maintenance....they whine how it's too expensive and the car goes to shit.

Do yourself a favor and never, ever join the B5 S4 or the C5 groups on Facebook. You'll run out of face to palm and probably just want to murder them all.

On a similar note I had a guy buy my B8 S4 grille to put on a customer's B7 A4, he said he was just going to trim the bumper to make it fit. Whatever repair shop he works at I will stay far far away from.

OP I share your frustration.

Fortunately, B5 S4 ownership is somewhat "self-cleansing". What I mean is that most d-bags without the knowledge to fix em (like your pal) simply can't afford to keep them on the road. Those than can actually pay to have them fixed will spend less money on B8 so they'll almost always move on anyways. (You can't blame these latter folks because B8s really do offer a good package.)

Now this condition probably exists in nearly any car community, but anyone with an S or RS (i.e. plural turbos, diffs, timing chains, coils, what have you) has usually come to find out the hard way that keeping one going after 10+ years or 150k miles is a losing battle unless you're a f$%@ng psycho (like myself :D). So, save for the occasional 16yr old that inherits a pampered S model or the smart guy/gal who is patient enough to buy one off a responsible owner, the majority of aging sports Audis will just end up either A) being driven into the ground or B) taken care of by the handful of gearheads that appreciate the image & their potential. Oddly enough, the B crowd actually appreciates the A crowd as they keep us fed in part-outs and junkyard finds.

People like the OP and PwrWgn talk about are the only things holding me back from a B5 S4 avant and I have not found the right one. This crowd makes it more and more tempting to go with a RS5 or RS4 or back to a AMG something. But the power a AWD stage 3 B5 puts down has me a bit hooked. I'm in Bellingham also and should be back in a Audi by the end of the year. Beside that guy you met, Bellingham has some really great guys that own Audis.

This crowd makes it more and more tempting to go with a RS5 or RS4 or back to a AMG something. But the power a AWD stage 3 B5 puts down has me a bit hooked. I'm in Bellingham also and should be back in a Audi by the end of the year. Beside that guy you met, Bellingham has some really great guys that own Audis.

Good to know about Audi enthusiasts in Bellingham! I try to throw the deuce up or wave like an idiot but rarely get anything back. I feel the same way about B5s these days. I've been on the prowl for a B5 S4 Avant as my family is growing beyond what both my sedans can handle and i will go kicking and screaming if I have to get an SUV(god forbid a minivan). The only problem is every B5 I see has been beat on by some idiot or has ridiculous mods that make me skeptical of its maintenance history.I've been thinking it over for a while and I think my next project will be swapping a 2.7T into a B7 Avant. There are plenty of well taken care of B7s out there, just got to find the right one. Preferably a S4 for all the extra goodies

We had the same issue we bought a R63 loved it but needed a truck. Once VW gives me a buy back date, I'll have a Audi a short time after that.

Not an SUV fan at all? Not even for a V10 TDI Touareg? Cause, I mean, if you are a masochist when it comes to the reliability/maintenance needs of the car you own, and you need the space......

(I think 90% of the SUVs/Xovers on the road are pointless and worthless. Then once in a while something like a V10 Treg is made, and it justifies their existence.....I really miss mine....thing was a beast in many ways.)

I love my Q5 and we only have me and my wife. haha. I had a 2011 A4 previously and this go around with the Q5 has been more satisfying so far - to me at least. It all depends on the driver.

On the other hand, anyone in the vancouver/portland area should join Northwest Audi Exclusive on facebook. 2zero6 is an off branch of them, and I went to Waterland VW/Audi show with them today. Lots of cool knowledgeable guys, with nice cars too. No BS ricer kids who bought an s4 cause its cool.

some facebook group....BIG mistake that I will never repeat. A bunch of kids from old money or Hondas with an exhaust and cut coils . I'm pretty young myself, but I felt so out of place with this group and listening to this baffoon that I left after 5 mins out of aggravation. The closer I get to 30 the more and more crotchety and less patient I am becoming.
