Opportunity for a 2012 A4 with blown motor

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi guys,

I have an opportunity to pick up a 2012 A4 wagon fully loaded for 5k. Why 5k? It has a blown motor. I got a call from a friend who's coworker has this car available given the noted issue. I have had many audi's, and have pulled the Allroad motor a couple times without any issues.

My question, and I've done almost no research thus far, is how easy is this swap compared to the Allroad? Also, what should I be looking for when obtaining a completely different motor?

Sorry for the premature post, I'm about to educate myself in the meantime. Any thoughts or input would be great.

Saw that thread, thanks for the heads up.

Just talked to the owner, looks like it's an oil consumption motor that he had some work done. Obviously not enough of the right work. I'm currently looking for a motor to put in and found one in a part out in the classifieds. The guy was super cool and in no real rush to get rid of it. He's asking 5k, but said if he doesn't get someone to buy it he's just gonna donate it. So that's a huge plus.

More on the car, it's a 2011 A4 avant with the titanium package. New brakes, snow tire setup, Thule rack all included. The rest of the car is stock, but very well maintained. I'm gonna see what I can do about the motor then get him an offer in the next couple days. I'm hoping I can pull this whole car and motor off for 6-8k and a weekend to swap.

Keep us posted please. Sounds like a great project especially since you have a unicorn Avant.

B8 avant's in general are not often seen. Titanium package on top of that is rare. This would also be a rare opportunity to put a S4 motor in. You would probably need a Stronic transmission and then I would also think about a Crown difff. Would be a massive undertaking, but at a $5k starting point, you would probably come out ahead in the end, especially if doing the work yourself. Please start on build thread on it if you do, I would love to see the progress!

I think I'm gonna stick with a clean 2.0 swap. As much as I'd love to get into some nice mods and a bigger motor, I'm not looking to drop the coin. I'm gonna grab the car this week and worry about the motor as time progresses.

    Couple questions:

I assume with the oil consumption and the rod that was thrown, the motor would be a useless rebuild?

If I was to get a same year engine with the potential of oil issues, what would I need to do to prevent this happening again? Is there an actual fix to the oil issue aside from just engine replacement? I've been looking through the threads of oil issues and most look like replacements.

With the ability to replace the motor, what are my options? I have seen A4/A5/Q5 motors for sale and I want to make sure I'm looking at the correct ones. Is there a specific list of engine codes that are preferred?

I'll be sure to get a thread started on the build and keep you guys informed. I'm pretty excited for this and will be meticulous about the swap and moving forward.

I'm anxious to see this one progress.

I'd just do like Lettuce did and go with the newer 2.0 out of an allroad and avoid the risks of the earlier version. Just my .02.
    Thanks,\

Looks like I need the CPMA engine. (This is more of a note for me than anything.)

Opportunity for a 2012 A4 with blown motor

All the B8 2.0s are interchangeable. Oil fix is a piston swap. Most don't have top end scoring so it's usually a straightforward process. However, you might get one with still a defective tensioner with potential head damage already. So if you can swing it, I agree a b8.5 2.0 is the safer bet.

Slap a 8.5 motor in there and if you're able to do the install or knows someone that doesn't charge shop rates you got a sweet car and the money you saved you can do tons of mods.

Definitely gonna save as much as I can. I agree a B8.5 swap would be the best way to go moving forward.

I've found several motors from LKQ that are the B8.5 from 2800-3800. Probably gonna do the whole gamut with the engine out. Carbon cleaning, specific deletes, and any gasket replacement that I need to do. If the motor is out I might as well make sure it's all done.

After looking through Lettuce's thread, I'm starting to get the itch for a bigger turbo and some other mods. Bad! Step one is getting the car back up and running.
