Any specific problem you may be referring to? My wife has filled up with 87 and she has not noticed anything however I noticed the car does not have that "pop or quick pick and go" feel.

91 would be better. I decided to run only 100 while waiting for e85 tune release :)

If you're leasing the car or only keeping it for a few years I don't think it's a big deal. I plan on driving mine till it dies so saving a couple of bucks every so often isn't worth the risk of excessive carbon build up.

Does the manual state premium required or recommended? If the latter, 87 is fine, you'll just have less power. If the former, you need to run 91. I would wager the A3 is recommended, so you should be fine. Most likely you won't have buildup issues unless you drive short distances exclusively.

However, you bought a nice German sedan, so saving a few hundred dollars and running it below its potential seems silly to me.
