    DIY Oil Change Advice

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,

My 2013 S4 has 88000 KM and needs an oil change. I bought the topsider oil extractor : but I have a couple of questions:

    1. How much oil does my car hold? The topsider has room for 8 quarts.
    2. How far down do I place the tube? I've read some posts here about going to far / not far enough.
    3. Any suggestions for which oil and how much to use?

    Thanks
    2013 S4

    DIY Oil Change Advice

Edit - Not trying to sound harsh, but seeing as you've been on the board since '05, I'm sure you have some thick skin!

1.) RTFM for the car and the extractor

    Pro tip, yes, search.
But really, use a dipstick and only insert the plastic tube in that far and NO further. It will get stuck and you'll be sorry. Lol

Thanks for the feedback, i'll look at the B8/B8.5 New Members Guide ;)

I'll also look into a dip stick to confirm the length.

Just thread it down til it bottoms out. Don't force it beyond that.

Oil capacity is like 7 quarts. Put in 6.5, check level, top off.

I recommend getting the dipstick, measuring the length and then using that number as a guide for how far to insert the topsider tube.

I just did it with the topside. If you follow instructions and measure the dipstick, it really only goes in another 1.5" or so before you feel it hit "bottom"

Stop and you can start pumping out. Once the oil starts flowing into the can, it goes pretty quick. Keep it pumped and it will go. I don't know why i didn't get this sooner!

I mean doing it the regular way is easy too, but man this is like lazy man way

problem with that kit is the tubing they use is too soft and is prone to flattening out, and the squeeze thing they supply to close off the line and build up pressure is lame as well. i upgraded to a slightly stronger tubing, and put a real open close valve in line, and now the thing works fantastic.

I might do the same once the tubing starts to fail. Can use like the reinforced clear tubing and a nicer valve with a reducer for the dipstick side.

Luckily this thing is overall fairly simple in design.

My 2016 S4 holds 7.25 U.S. quarts (actually the manual states 7.2 quarts but another 5/100's of a quart is not going to kill anything).

Cut the end of the tube you're using at a very slight angle and push it in until it hits bottom. Don't force it any more than that.

I use Mobil 1 European blend 0w40, as specified in Audi's literature.

    Some recommendations.

Warm up your engine a bit. Doesn't need to be at full operating temperature but it should be half way there more perhaps a little more than half way.

Park your car at a slight downward position, angled so that the car is pointing a little to the right (starboard) in your driveway or some place where you can do this. This will allow the oil in the pan to move to that point a little more and allow you to get the most of the used oil out of the pan.

Watch the movement of the oil through the tubing and make sure you maintain vacuum in the canister so that it will continue to pull oil out of the crankcase. When air starts to come up with the last of the oil, continue to pump until you see no more oil (you might want to carefully raise and lower the tube a little to make sure you get as much of the old oil out as you can.

Another thing. Be careful when installing your new filter. There are two rubber seals supplied. Be sure you install the outer seal on the filter canister carefully. If not, you won't get a solid seal and oil will leak out. And use a torque wrench when replacing the cap on the filter canister.

    Hope this all helps.

^^^ I wouldn't run the engine and then do the procedure just to warm it up. If you must have warm oil to make it flow easier (not sure why, it's thin oil anyway), drive the car a while and bring the oil up to full operating temperature and then go back home and park the car for at least an hour. This way, all the oil that's circulating some of the engine parts that normally drain into the pan overnight have a chance to do just that and the oil will still be plenty warm for you to gain whatever flow benefit you think you're getting from that. Also, don't park with it leaning to the right... the dipstick is on the driver's side. All that said, I don't endorse doing oil changes from the top, but that's just me.
