After almost exactly two years of ownership with zero breakdowns (although numerous proactive repairs) she was last seen being towed up I-35 to the shop.

I know you don't have to be a rocket scientist to be a tow truck driver but don't argue with me about needing a flatbed. For the love of God, AWD vehicles are common nowadays.

All I was thinking all day was "I just gave you new drive axles and this is the thanks I get".

You don't need a flatbed. Almost every tow truck has wheel dollies on-bard for towing AWD vehicles or illegally parked cars.

^^This. I've been towed on dollies before, no issue. I always keep a keen eye on what they're doing though.

Easy fix, bring her home. Just had to replace that on my Passat. No special tools needed if you get creative w/ a wood block to knock the basket retaining ring.

Didn't have time to deal with it myself and I needed it back this weekend so I just paid the shop to do it.

On the bright side, it did fix the mild detonation issue I've been having for the last year or so under heavy load. The pump must have been weakening and last week I almost ran the tank dry which might have been the straw that broke the camel's back at its age/mileage.
