I seriously looked into this for someone local to me and they were going to have me do it until something happened with the car. Sorry but I can't say any more about the person or car because they don't like personal stuff posted. However on the topic of adding flaps. There are vacuum operated flaps sold by a bunch of companies and I saw a bunch on Ebay for cheap. I was going to get two normally open flap units in the correct diameter. The ones that I saw come as full plate (like a throttle plate in a throttle body) so I was going to drill a lot of holes in it. That way the exhaust can still go through when the flap is closed but it would quiet things down. When the flap is open the exhaust would be full volume and flow for max power and sound. Yes the middle of the flap would still partially be in the way with the flap open but that minor flow restriction wouldn't be worth worrying about. Remus exhausts do something similar on some of their exhausts but I think that it is a manual adjustment so you have to get out and crawl under the car to open/close the flaps.

There would be a power restriction with the flap closed but such is the trade off for a quieter exhaust. I try to keep as few restrictions in an exhaust as possible and it is bad to have restrictions that far away from the engine.
