    Angry Seized Wheel Bolt

    Gang,

I went to rotate the tires on my '08 S4 this weekend and didn't get very far. I was working on the security bolts first and they all came off pretty easy except for the the front passenger. Wouldn't budge. Damn. I worked at it and tried a few things for a while with no luck. Decided to quit and regroup. Fast forward a couple of days and I just happened to be driving by my Audi dealer and thought I'd stop in and see if they could get it loose. Most of the techs had already gone home for the day, but they drove it around back to check it out. Well, they didn't get it off either.

So, what do you do in this situation? I'm almost ready to try hammering a slightly smaller socket onto it with a rubber mallet and trying that trick. I don't think I can really get to the bolt enough to get PB blaster on it. I suppose I could have someone weld a nut on the front. Any good tricks?

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Few thoughts come to mind and you may have already tried them..

    - Is it possible to put something on the lug nut and tap it with a hammer? Goal is to break the "seal" and then try to loosen it again?
    - Also, this might sound odd, but it works in many applications, what about trying to tighten it just a nudge and then loosening it? Put a ratchet and tap it with a hammer just to break that seal.

Have you tried with wheel off the ground using an impact (low setting)? Some have that hammer feature where it may just move it a nudge perhaps

Would you be able to post a pic of the lug nut?
Switched to Tesla and have never been happier. No more shady mechanic bills and excuses - oil top off before an oil change is normal or dealing with outdated forums that have image size limitations. And no more dealing with vendors that do not provide horsepower numbers but sell you random things by labeling them as performance parts. No more dealing with the Audi dealership and having to buy custom Audi specific tools. Wow. I can't believe I lived through all of this. Money pit.

I guarantee u get it off by using a pipe. Put a solid socket type wrench on like the one that comes with the jack in the trunk. Put a pipe on it, the bigger the better. Make sure it's a solid steel pipe. Make sure the tires are on the ground when doing it. Im a tool maker/cnc machinist by trade and I've never had a bolt I couldn't get off using a pipe. Good luck

I would try soaking it with PB blaster when it's cold... The thing about penetrating oils is that they'll work into the thread to break it free....

Give it a good soaking and wait 15mins.... Another application and wait five. Then set your tire iron up in a good location to kick it and give it a good hoof with the heel of your boot.... Should pop free...

Hope it works for you... Good luck

Like koopsdeville said. A pipe will work over your regular breaker bar/lug wrench. Leverage is your friend.

Agreed - just make sure that socket is on there nice and snug otherwise you run the risk of rounding the bitch off.

I had to have all 4 of mine drilled out. Not doing that again.

Impact wrench or repeated fast hammer taps on regular wrench.

I've used the bar on the jack, as you have in the picture, plenty of times and works like a champ. Detached it and put it on your 1/2 socket or lug nut wrench. Good luck on the other side.

Yea, venom's got it right. That's basically what I've been trying. The problem with those damn security bolts is the key slips out of them so easily. Thanks for the tips, gang. I'll get it out if it's the last thing I do.

Well, I ended up taking a torch to it, but finally worked it out. I proceeded to throw all of the security bolts in the trash and put normal ones back in. Went ahead and put new pads in while the wheels were off. Also painted the calipers red with G2. Looks good and, as you know, red calipers add about 15hp!

Don't be joking... 40bhp on the wheels MINIMUM!
