    URO timing belt damper

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
so i was going through my order history on ECS tuning and noticed that the last timing belt kit i ordered had an URO timing belt damper...the tensioning roller is NTN, OEM audi water pump and continental belts...

i looked because i ran across a few threads on other forums that said URO parts were crap...does anyone have any experience or ever hear of an URO timing belt damper failing prematurely??? i changed it last year and only have around ~5,000 miles, if that, on the new parts...

here is the part i am referring to...

URO parts do not have the best reputation from what I've seen. Never had a personal experience though. If you are concerned, order a new tensioner and swap it out. Should be fairly easy to do.

not as a recommendation, but every time i've done a full timing belt water pump etc job i've used ebay chinese parts. Chain Tensioner was the only one that ever gave me issues, all else worked flawelessly.

    ÜRO parts = garbage

NTN is where its at. Just order your timing kit from integrated engineering. They wont sell you any junk.

Our kits no longer use a URO belt damper. They come standard with a Febi damper. You are more than welcome to have any one of the parts in our kit swapped out for any brand we offer, just give our sales staff a call and they'll take care of you.

Maybe the next time you do the cam belt job try changing up to the newer style tensioner, just easier to install really.

Yeah, timing belt components are an area you really don't want to cheap out on. Last time I bought a tensioner I spent an extra.. $10 or so for an INA one, I wanted German quality.

Opened the box and it was made by NTN in Japan anyway - still a reputable company. I guess INA doesn't actually make them and just sourced them. But had I know that I could have ordered NTN for $10 less!

URO is total crap. I bought one of the ECS kits with that tensioner. It lasted 28,000 km. Nothing like having to do the job all over again at 1/4 of the service interval. Not fun at all on a transverse 1.8t. I don't buy anything but OEM parts now... I'd love to put some blame on ECS for packaging that POS in their kit, but it is my fault for not doing my homework before buying. Plenty of folks on Vortex dissing URO when I looked after the fact. Same thing you discovered apparently.

Personally I'd change it out. My engine was saved by pure luck. It had jumped two teeth by the time I realized it had gone bad...

is it normal for the tensioner to sit so closely to the damper?

i'm not sure if the tension in the belt fluctuates at all...there doesn't seem to be much play, is pretty snug and it doesn't make any weird noises while running...

from what i can tell nothing looks out of place in the above picture in regards to tensioner. your engine is quite dirty behind the timing belt though. are you not running the upper cover? or have you battled with valve cover oil leakage?

lol, that's just 13 years of built up crude, coolant, dirt and oil from my old VC gasket that was leaking before i changed it...i run with the cover on and just removed it to inspect it when i took that photo...(plus i was being an ass and pouring oil in without a funnel and missing the fill hole)
