    S6 Trailer Hitch Options

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello All,

New guy here looking for a little clarity on trailer hitch options for an S6. I see the standard curt class I hitch that bolts to the spare tire well. I would prefer something that is hidden when not in use. Any chance that the allroad style hitches will fit?

Also curious about the wiring. I know ARs offered a factory harness. Is it possible/ worth while adapting this rather than an aftermarket harness?

I'm pretty sure that the hitch from an allroad would fit the S6 since they are on nearly the same platform. There is a guy who is building a new patch of hitches right now if you want to get an order in. Here's the thread where you can contact him and see some pictures: http://www.audiworld.com/forums/audi.../#post24848944

As for wiring, I'm not sure. I know that on allroads from 2002-2005 they came with the wiring pre-installed. Early ones were a special order. You may be lucky in that they installed them on all 2002 and later wagons. Take a look under the rear bumper close to the center line of the car. You may see an round connector under there. If you do then you're golden.

The Allroad hitch bolts up to the S6 perfectly, you'll have to trim the valence under the bumper a bit, there's kind of no clean way to do it. You might just want to remove it.
As for the wiring- I bought an OEM harness and adapted it. DON'T BOTHER! I got it from Europaparts and it was super expensive and a headache to get right. And then I needed an adapter from Euro to US /4pin that I got from the Rover club, also expensive.
Only nice part was it would tell you if you had a bulb out, which seemed like always. Amazon has a couple choice of wiring kits for about $40 that work great.

Sweet. Thanks for the info. Looks like that hitch is the way to go.

I figured it would bolt up. I haven't had the opportunity to take a look under an allroad to compare.

How well does the S6 tow the travel trailer? Is that a Scamp?

It pulled that trailer like it wasn't even there, no trouble at all. I've since sold the trailer, it was a 'Trillium' ..throwback to the 70's like the early Scamp.

I have the curt hitch and it's great for the price. Not hidden, but it's not very noticeable at all when the ball mount isn't installed. Here's my review on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/review/R2PM5VKHXZSYFA/

I'm developing an unhealthy compulsion to buy a trailer now.

I'd love a hitch, so I can get a small trailer to tow the motorcycle to the track with.

If I can't find a deal on one over the winter I'll probably just weld up my own. The one I used to have was OEM, but it's really quite simple, there wouldn't be anything technical about making it- just need a hardcore welder and some heavy steel. I have an old Milwaukee Arc welder that I've used to make motor mounts/crossbars from scratch.
It's about $100 in steel. And most of the bends you see in this picture could be avoided. It's just steel that replaces the bumper mounts, and a cross-bar in between, with the vertical part for the receiver, and you can buy that off ebay for like $35.
