    Engine Fan Always Running

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 2013 Audi A4 in which the engine fan runs in the following scenarios. I'd like to know how to narrow down the cause of this issue.

    1. Right when I start it and will stay on as long as the engine is running.
    2. The fan will stay on for 1-5 minutes after I turn off the car but I read this is normal.
    3. When I open the door and wait about 10 seconds the fan will turn on for about 5 seconds and then go off.

I read this could be related to the ECU, thermostat, fan control module, or fan relay. I have a APR Stage2 tune which was flashed through the port so I'm not excluding an ECU issue. Most of the issues I have read are drivers that have their fan on even if the car is off. Like stated above, the fan does turn off after a few minutes when I turn off the car. I have no CEL but my VCDS scan pulled a 0480 fault code - Coolant Fan Control Circuit 1 and a few other unrelated faults.

Can someone help me troubleshoot this? The VCDS scan is below.

    Thanks,

    Doug

Is there any way to verify it is the fan control module before purchasing it? I read a lot of fan control module issues cause the fan to always stay on until it drains your battery. Mine does turn off after the car is off for a few minutes.

Update: Would I be correct in saying it's an ECU issue if my egine fan sometimes comes on for a few seconds after I open my door while the car is off? This is in addition to the fan always running while my car is running and running between 1-10 minutes after I turn off my car.

In VCDS Module 1 engine go to measuring blocks and select blocks 38 and 39. These are what the ECU is commanding for fan speed. I had my A/C off and fan 1 was only reading 10% and fan 2 zero.

Finally had a chance to test. Mine is reading about the same. Fan 1 at 10.20% and fan 2 at zero. Does that verify an issue with the ECU? what do these percentages mean? Both of my fans were running while I was performing the test.

It looks as if the ECU is functioning correctly. It is commanding a normal fan setting and the fans are both on so I would think that the fan assembly is bad. The last things I would check would be that the ECU is receiving a coolant temp reading to help rule out a safety override mode. It should one of the other measuring blocks under engine. I would think the fan control (I believe it is part of the fan assembly) is faulty. I would think it could still be a possibility of wiring (In case the fan module doesn't get an ECU command it may turn to full on).

It mentions an output test, I haven't looked in VCDS for the test to see whats there.

All coolant temps respond with values. Looks like it may be the fan control module or the wiring. Thanks for the assistance.

If you have the A/C on, the fan should run all the time. Are you running the A/C?

No the A/C is not on and both fans run while the engine is running all the time. My understanding is that one fan is to keep the engine cool and the other fan is for the A/C. The fan also kicks on for a few seconds while the car is off and I open the door. For example, if I open my car door to get something after the engine has been off for an hour, the engine fans will turn on for 3-7 seconds dependent on how hot the engine is. Is there a connection between opening the door and the fan control module? I'm wondering if there is some type of short in the wiring to the fan control module.

I would use vag-com to look at real time coolant temperatures. I had a fan issue in my mk5 GTI where they'd stay on all the time. Ended up being a faulty thermostat. The ECU was seeing unexpected coolant temps and apparently was running the fan constantly as a precautionary safety measure. There is not a specific fault code for a bad thermostat. There's just codes that point to the thermostat being a possibility in some cases. That said, I feel like your fan control module is just as likely the culprit. Thermostat changes are a complete PITA so I'd try to confirm irregular coolant temps before changing. Otherwise I'd prob try changing the FCM first. Good luck!

The temp was reading 96 Celsius. I read this is the normal operating temperature.

Isn't there a sensor on the radiator that reads the coolant temp and it triggers the fans when a certain temp is reached. Check there first

A quick Google search found the coolant fan switch is likely your culprits ----- and it looks fairly easy to replace

Is this the same thing as the fan control module? Seems like two different things. Why do you think it's the fan switch and not the fan control module?

I believe older vehicles use the fan switch and newer vehicles use the fan control module. So we are essentially talking about the same thing. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Does the coolant fan switch only turn on the engine fan and the 2nd fan gets turned on by the A/C? If so, I would think my issue is still the fan control module since both fans always run at the same time.

I replaced the fan control module and the problem still exists. Could it be the ECU? Fan switch? I'm thinking it's the ECU because both engine fans also turn on for a few seconds when I open my car doors while the engine is off.

Can someone explain in the VCDS what the measuring values mean for the coolant fan? Should coolant fan 1 be 10.20% and coolant fan 2 be 0%? Both fans are continuously running while performing the test. Does zero percent mean the fan should not be running?

It turned out to be an ECU issue.

How are you going to fix this ECU issue? Do you need a new ECU or just the programming is messed up?

I purchased a used ECU with programming. Everything works except I'm getting a message where the trip meter is saying, "SAFE". I also see a fault in VCDS saying the immobilizer has not adapted. I'm trying to work with the vendor on a resolution. I'm also going to send my original ECU to APR to see if they can fix it in case we can't get the purchased ECU to work correctly.

I'm having the exact same issues. Fans full speed with cold starts, a/c off, then with key ignition off , open door fans kick on. Did some logging, coolant & oil temps are good and get the same Fan 1&2 results as you. I wonder if APR can see/find the ECU coding issue/s or just resets it. I'll make a call to APR in the next few days.
