jesus, parts are like $300-400 tops...is he really going to charge you ~$200 an hour for labor??

i can do it myself now in about three hours without a lift...give it a shot it's not too difficult and very well documented...

^What jonan said, but for a beginner it would probably take at least two days from my experience.

Also, Is it a Euro shop?

true, the first time i've ever changed a timing belt on a car was my b6...started at 6am and finished at 8pm...but that was because i double and triple checked every single thing i was doing as i followed the DIY in the tech section...

The "ultimate" kit from ECS using VW/Audi parts is $1014.06, the Audi branded parts are not cheap and I'm assuming that's what the shop meant by OEM at least I would hope so for the money.

    OP said:

    Primary Water pump
    Thermostat
    Timing belt

    That's like $430 from ECS.

That DOESN'T include necessary things like a tensioner roller and dampener, and timing belt rollers. It doesn't include valve cover gaskets or accessory belt either, which I don't think are "necessary" for a timing belt job.

    So, from ECS:
    Timing Belt: $100.01
    Thermostat: $65.68
    Water Pump: $276.95

So I would nail down that parts list first. If it's $1000 in parts, $1000 for 7 hours of labor is still high.

For a 3.0, that price isn't too unreasonable for a full timing belt job, but it is on the high end IMO. If it is just the water pump (which would be silly to change itself unless the timing belt was just recently done), then that is a bad price.

For the 1.8T owners out there, the cheapest 3.0 option using quality parts for a FULL timing belt kit is going to be $500-600+. Using all OEM parts, it will be higher. Expect 1-1.5 days labor if they're charging by book time. It is a much more involved job on the V6.

If you have a place to wrench, you could buy all the parts, plenty of tools, and still come out ahead. Think it was 450 in parts when I did mine....and there were a few non related things in there.

    Where in Indiana are you?
