    Looking for opinions - B6 S4 going to B7 S4 or B8 A4

    Hey

Looking for opinions. Right now I am driving an '04 S4 Avant 6MT. Mileage is getting up there +255,000 km (that's 159,000 miles) and little things are starting to go. MAF, fuel filter need attention and I should be doing the Sparks plug and coils soon based on mileage. My morning chain rattle the other day went away but with the mileage......

I recently moved and my morning commute takes me 15min in the morning and over an hour going home. My recent spinal surgery reminds me it's there on the way home in the stop and go with the clutch.

Looking for an tip B7 S4 Avant in Canada is almost a unicorn. Couple on the market but the closest has some warning bells ringing (the rims and the A4 floormatts).

I am here asking if anyone has experience with moving from and B6/B7 S4 Avant to a B8 A4 Avant?

I have read nicks car blog on the differences (http://nickscarblog.com/cars/audi-a4...h-should-i-buy) but at the end of the day he is talking B7 S4 versus B7 A4 fwd.

    Thanks!!!!

    Keep it!!!!!
    Seriously, keep it for LIFE!!!!!

As a former DG B6 S4 Avant with a 6MT, do not sell your avant. Do your best due diligence to maintain its upkeep and brunt the maintenance cost because there really is no substitution for an AWD V8 Wagon comparable to your B6 **UNLESS** you decide to up yourself to a MB C63S Estate but that's a whole different level of upping yourself.

As per my experience, I went from my S4 Avant to a B8.5 Allroad due to unfortunate circumstances. There is nothing wrong with my AR but it's just a different car that isn't my Avant. In the end, it really does come down to your preference and how much out of pocket money you want to commit to your B6, as the maintenance costs and "nightmare" issues aren't friendly to your wallet.

    EDiT:

I daily commuted with my B6 S4 Avant so I understand the stop/go plus fuel costs versus my 8sp autoManual with decent fuel mileage.

Let me preface this by stating I have no experience with a B6 or B7 S4 Avant. However, given the current state of your B6 S4 Avant and the potential catastrophic issues you could have with both it and a B7 S4 Avant you may want to look at a B8 Avant with maybe a stage 2+ or stage 3 tune. You can get a lower mileage, more reliable Avant that has the potential to match the speed you are looking for. I looked at B7 S4 Avants long and hard but at the end of the day I didn't want to risk the potential maintenance nightmare. There are some people that seem to have no issues while others have nothing but issues so if you are willing to roll the dice (which I would not blame you one bit) the B7 S4 may be what you are looking for. Good luck!

    Thanks for the responses.

Slow4 - yes I looked at the MB. Being mid-40 I could pull it off. The wife however would not see the benefit on that amount of cash and I am unsure as to maint costs on that bad boy. I tried an C6 A6 avant with the 3.0T but those appear to be rarer than unicorns with currently only one for sale in Canada. (And that one has been for sale for some time).

Tony81 - it's not so much the speed but rather the instant on with the engine for merging and passing that I love about the S4. I admit I have been lucky with the 'time bomb' that the timing chain is. God knows I have the art of an oil change down to a science to keep it that way. That is my biggest hesitation with buying another B6/B7 S4: will I be lucky a second time.

Toying with the idea of going for a low mileage C5 S6 but those are hard to find up north.

Now with three options - a non-start issue has made me look for low mileage cars

    Option 1 - 2010 A4 Avant with S-Line. Figure need an addition $5K in parts for performance;

    Option 2 - 2008 A6 Avant with 3.2L. The 3.0T are a unicorn up here too.

Option 3 - Would an older S6 Avant be reliable?

4.2L V8TT (double the turbos, double the fun, double the maintenance)
    5.2L V10 (V10 grumble = V10 heat = V10 maintenance costs)

Dont think an S6 Avant existed, just sedans

Looking at the 2002-2003 C5 S6 Avant. 4.2 with timing belt. Five speed auto know to be weak.
