    FWD or Quattro

    I'm contemplating a switch from a Volvo S60 T6 FWD to an A4

Located in NJ - bad roads but guaranteed snow.

I've always been happy with FWD and an extra set of rims + snow tires. Why would I want to spend the additional $$ on AWD? This is not a provocative question but a genuine request for justifying the AWD for non snow days?

Really depends on what kind of driver you are, the A4 having 252 ponies, when you make a right turn on a red light and try to get into traffic, expect some spinning on a nice day with a FWD, nevermind on a rainy day. This does not happen with a Quattro, when you turn and accelerate, all four wheels are obeying the pedal.

Of course in the snow you definitely have an all around increased traction on take off with Quattro but Quattro will not help stopping.....you will end up in the ditch just as well as with a FWD.

If you don't need all the hp and like FWD you may want to wait for the new A4 Ultra which is coming to the US soon, 190 hp FWD, $3,000 cheaper and better gas mileage.

For me in Canada Quattro is the only way to go snow or not, I'm not an aggressive driver but when I want or need the grip I like to have it.

You're going to notice a significant different with a B9 against the Vulva, I just had an S90 as a hire car for a couple of days and god did I miss the tech in the B9.

This is my first Audi and I've come from having VW Jetta's (200 BHP). One of the primary reasons I got interested in the A4's was quattro - I'm just over wheel spin and I'm talking dry weather. I understand we have a climate a bit like Florida so there's certainly no snow to speak of.

I'd say it's going to depend on the motor spec that you're looking for myself. If you're looking at the 250 BHP petrol then yes, I'd get quattro.

I was in the same situation as you coming to the B9 from my FWD 2014 Mercedes CLA. I debated FWD vs Quattro on my new B9 as well.

I went with Quattro and I'm glad I did. Even though I have not had my B9 in any extreme weather yet, the way it performs day to day is exceptional. The more I drive it the more I like it. Yvan sums up the traction advantages well, I totally agree.

What you don't hear often is how efficient Audi's engine/Quattro system is. My CLA was a 208 hp, 2.0 FWD, but my 252 hp, full time AWD B9 is consistently giving me the same or better MPG and the B9 is capable of nearly a full second faster 0-60 time. I only expect this efficiency to improve as the B9 breaks in fully.

Fellow NJ here, from a winter aspect I've had a FWD with dedicated winter wheels/tires and they are good for sure (better than A/S), but with Quattro + dedicated winter wheels/tires you are almost unstoppable. I say almost because you can still get high centered in really deep packed snow. Otherwise, full time AWD really is confidence inspiring when driving in any adverse weather condition.

From a financial aspect, it is a little more expensive but iirc the residual value is higher on Quattro cars which is favorable if you are leasing and/or planning to sell down the road. The other end of this coin is if this will be your cheap DD/beater and you already have an AWD or RWD monster in the garage.. then go with whatever makes financial sense.

its all in the way you drive and the tires you have ..... my 97 Maxima with steel rims and blizzaks were better in the winter than my S5 with Dunlop Sportmaxx Summer tires .. would the maxima be close if the S5 had blizzaks? HELL NO .. but in this situation it was.. so 1) you can get away with FWD with excellent tires for conditions and 2) with the wrong tires it doesn't matter if you have quattro it won't help much

Stop being so frugal and grab some snows, so you can drive like a jerk all year round (and be able to stop) like the rest of us.

Seriously. How is this even a question? Who would want a FWD car anyway? FWD belongs in a crappy fleet of rental cars. Sorry in advance to any precious flowers.
