06 2.0T misfiring and in general just not feeling healthy.

It's been getting worse for awhile and I've been avoiding it. Engine light is for random miss fires. It misfires pretty badly on startup and then settles down within a minute as the engine gets some heat into it.

New plugs and coil packs 2 years ago. put new plugs in and seemed better for a day, then back where we started. I will read codes to see if it's still cyl#1 and put an old coil pack in to see if it changes.

I see some oil coming out the hoses on the drivers side which I believe is where the intercooler is. May just be the hose coming up to the intake. clamps are tight, more oil than I would consider normal. Oil consumption itself seems to be minimal. Considering the reputation they have I'd say it's very good. I don't really have to add oil between 5K changes. It's about ready to add when it's time for the change. I have occasionally gotten a code for boost limit, which I'm told by Audi techs that it's almost certainly the waste gate starting to bind up.

Timing belt and all that was done by me along with a bunch of seals and a couple breather hoses about two years ago. Camshaft recall for follower failure was done at the dealer at about 85K, car now has 130K.

Just looking for thoughts on specific diagnoses or a general plan. I"m not as familiar with this motor as the older ones. Once it's running it's OK, but you can still feel some hesitation, as well as surging early on that's almost certainly torque converter.

Thanks in advance for diagnoses suggestions.

Try this... when you are driving along, put it in high boost/downshift, to where you go into vacuum, if that makes sense, and see if you have smoke coming out of the tail pipe. This seems to happen to me and I am fairly certain my valve cover is cracked inside. I plastic welded a part of it and it made it better.

This is just a random thought from everything I have read and isn't really a proven fact.

If you have oil going into your combustion chambers I would assume it could cause a misfire.

    Again just thoughts nothing proven.

I've had so many issues with misfires and in my experience here are the issues I've come across with misfires.

1.) Check the gap of your plugs. I have a K04 and it was recommended I run colder plugs gapped at .022. This may not apply to you but maybe check to see if your plugs are consistently gapped.
2.) Clean your valves, if it is gunked up it can lead to misfires.
3.) Your in tank fuel pump may be on its way out which can starve your engine.
4.) Swap coils and see if the misfire follows the coil.

I agree with the above post, when I've gotten new plugs I had to gap them all, not doing so could cause misfires as they come with a larger gap. Also I agree on the fuel pump but I was start with a fuel filter, and you have checked the cam follower since that warranty situation right? They have to be checked every oil change/every other oil change....

I think I'm going back to an old carburetor car...

I haven't touched it since I posted. The plugs I put in are the OEM platinum whatevers, can't gap those without fubaring the tip. The car is bone stock, stock turbo, stock boost. It should run on stock plugs but...

I think it's got multiple issues and will probably take a pro to solve them. But I wanted to at least try and get through some basics before giving up. I'm stubborn that way. I'll play with coil packs first. I'm also sure it's time for the valves to be cleaned. I vague remembered reading about the in tank fuel pump. I'll google that for testing procedure.

All kidding aside, I am seriously considering going back to an older car. Try to find a garage queen and then run it into the ground. I just don't have confidence in this car like I did the older ones.

I just read and cleared codes. Still showing misfire in cyl 1, which is the one next to the radiator right? I swapped the coil to an old one that I saved. I'm not expecting it to be that easy, but hey it's worth a shot. I measured the duty cycle on the lift pump. 51.5% at idle. Seems unlikely that pump is the issue.

Well it's been smooth and no lights. coil packs were all new and good ones from Europa just a couple years ago. But hey, if that's the main issue than I'll take it. Now to tackle the coolant flange on the back of the head that is pissing out coolant at a prodigious rate.

Ya coil packs can be like that, even brand new ones can fail randomly, glad to hear its (mostly) running though!
