    Tdc timing marks

Do the timing marks in the crank damper = tdc? Or is it just used for timing belt install?

Have a p1338 code and it looks like the crank damper mark's way off TDC (physically check tdc thru spark plug hole). Around 15deg. Crank sprocket is dowelled.

Adjusted timing to tdc or close to tdc, disregarding crank pulley mark, engine finally run decently.

How many timing belt teeth does it take to hit the valves. Also even a slight kiss on the valves equates to zero compression right?

Currently at ~140psi engine warm. With timing probably not timed perfectly. Just eyed the piston TDC to check. Need to replace/check crank sprocket before any more testing.

With the timing timed with pulley timing marks compression was erratic, thought it was the gauge at first, it also got significantly worse when the engine was warm 100-150cold to 60psi warm. Comp did jump to ~160psi when i tossed some oil in the cylinders. Barely had any power to even crawl.

You can always set piston 1 to tdc and then use crank lock pin to make sure crank doesnt slip on you. the keyhole is around the a/c compressor area on the v6.

Forgot 1.8t. Thanks for the info though.

The mark on the crank pulley when lined up with the mark on the lower cover is number 1 TDC.

    My process is:
    - Set head at TDC using gear and valve cover marking
    - Align crank to TDC with pulley and cover on
    - Remove pulley and cover
    - Put the belt around the crank gear
    - Put lower cover then crank pulley back on
    - Get the belt snugged up into the crank gear
    - Pull the belt up around the water pump or intermediate shaft ensuring no slack
    - Maintain tension on the belt while slipping it into/around the grooves on the cam gear. Ensure during this part the belt does not dislodge from the crank gear. You may need to take a little slack out of the opposite side of the belt to make sure it doesn't pop off.
    - The tensioner pulley unit should already be installed at this point
    - Bolt in the tensioner
    - Verify markings are still good
    - Pull the pin and rotate by hand at least one full cycle
    - If things are not kosher a pair of channel locks can be used to slowly depress the tensioner back down and reinsert the pin. You squeeze the little tab that sticks out towards the passenger side from the tensioner pulley and the part of the tensioner that protrudes toward the passenger side together.

Thanks for the info guys. Need to get it in service position to check the crank gear is still bolted in place.

My crank PULLEY mark is around 15deg counter clockwise of TDC.

Adjusted timing belt a few teeth to get cams/pistons TDC (pulley mark 15deg ccw). P1338 code is gone and was able to drive it up the driveway. Car would barely crawl before.

Good thing crank gear didn't fully let go.

Really hope you have no valve damage.

Yup. Comp hopefully gets better than 140psi when it gets timed correctly.

It was 140 across the board? Id say your valves probably aren't bent if you got a consistent result

Yup. Around 5psi of highest and lowest.

Fully sheared key, saved by a broken dowel (just a hardened drill bit that was cut to size). Only used one dowel because the other hole didn't quite line up with the holes on the crank.

Bolt was snug at best. No where near tight. Crank has no damage apart from an ovaled dowel hole.

Wowww. So lucky man. Gonna use the IE press fit and double dowel this go round?

I've noticed the belt is easy to get one tooth off when lining it up, I usually put it on, put the crank pulley back on with the shield temporarily and rotate 1 degree just to be sure it's lined up. If the two are very close, I call it good and finish the install, if not the bottom is dead on and the top is a little before in my experience. You need the crank pulley on to line up to that top mark though, even if only hand tight.

I didn't see the sheared key until after my last post. Wow lol
