Having a non start issue that is inconsistent

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Good afternoon all!

So I have a 2008 S4 avant 6MT, and recently (About 5 times now since I bought the car in April) I will get in and try to start the car, and this is what would happen:

No check engine light or having the dash light up like a christmas tree, only the regular lights that will pop on before you turn the car on, and it is trying to continually start. I do notice on all occasions that the fuel pump is not priming the engine, hence why it is not fully turning over, but it is not consistent. I have done a lot of research and looking and even got my car scanned (which it found 17 faults, will come back to that) and it seems that my issue is the crank position sensor. I have looked into the faults to the best of my ability and they were all thrown 300 miles ago, about the last time it didnt start. But to my understanding the crank position sensor is what will send a signal to all of them (8 being fuel injectors) to be ready to start up and go. Am I on target with this? is there something I am missing? It usually takes about 10 minutes of just trying to start to finally get some fuel through and it starts up, but I would like to find the root cause and get it fixed. If there is something that i missed or any input that people have, would be greatly appreciated; Thanks!

It does not. It has been completely random. Once after stopping at a shop for ~10 minutes, once after being in the parking lot sitting for 8 hours, once sitting at my parents for 4 hours, once for almost a day, and another just at work but for about 3 hours. No situation was the same

It has been priming cold with no issue every time. Has not happened for almost 2 weeks but just had the car finally scanned to try and shed light on what might be the issue and get some input :)

I gotta say that's weird but not far fetched for Audi. If ur not getting a cel at this point and everything is running fine just drive it until u do get a cel or else you'll b chasing a ghost

Either or starter or ignition switch, I have both brand new OEM. I bought them for the car and a test drive later the timing chain went so I'm parting the car. $200 shipped for both

Is that the ECU relay under the ECU cover? "614" on it

There's a second relay there too - what's that one?

It's the first one with 614, but some s4 have a different relay I think

my 2006 the fuel injector connectors were cracked and even though they looked tight... a quick push and a click sound told me that after heating up, they would pop loose and i would get those errors you listed above....

also looks like both your motor mounts are bad, but they wont cause your starting/running problems... time for some 034 solids with resistors ;)

you also have a broken vacuum line... the one that operates your flapper/s and gives the secondary pump error...

ordering a full wiring harness was out of the question for me and i wasn't going to start cutting and splicing new connectors in (fuel injectors)... so tie wraps it is!!! haven't had those issues anymore

that is from just going off of your codes

Dude, also check your crank shaft sensor. That may very well be the culprit.

Would a bad relay cause the car to crank for a long time before starting or just not start at all as the OP is experiencing?

I was experiencing what the OP was and it was fixed by changing my crank shaft sensor. My car starts now but cranks for a while before it does. I had this same symptom before my car just totally wouldn't start at all previous to changing the crank shaft sensor.

Definitely crank position sensor. Don't waste your time with anything else until doing this. I've been through the same symptoms. It's not too hard to replace either.

I agree with this man. Change that first, you can get it at NAPA auto. I had a shop do it, but from what I've read it's a doable replace.

Thanks man ^ just be careful with Napa and electronics though. Sometimes they don't play well as a replacement

i just posted the resolution to my problem in my post about this, including detailed info about why this problem sucks to diagnose.

no, it's not anything under the ECU, but there is an identical relay under there. it's located in the picture Velox posted, which is above the driver's footwell (at least in LHD).

all of those engine codes are related to this issue; that relay drives the SAI, evap, and LDP systems and thus they throw codes when it dies. the ABS code may be related, too, as the brake controller is sensitive and gets pissed off when the electrical system freaks out (and the FP relay is like half the electrical system)

it probably would not start at all, as this was the problem i also had. it was always minutes to hours until i could start it again. i do have a separate starter problem where it'll take a couple cranks to start the car. i find the best way to handle it is to not crank is continuously, but to crank it in bursts of 2-3 turns and then turning the key to run. the problem seems to be the starter solenoid isn't retracting in time to let the engine continue, so if you sit there cranking it it may never retract. giving it bursts gives it a chance to retract.

Edit to my original crank shaft pos. Suggestion...I didn't look at all those codes you had. If all those codes are related to that relay like Emilio says, then I'd go that route for now. Any other time I'd def say crank sensor cause it's a very common issue. But then again all the problems I ever have are common issues ha

Much obliged! I will look to get it ordered, along with the motor mounts (probably do the snub mount while I am at it) Thanks!
