    Engine stand to do chains

I've seen it in a picture before so I'm believing it's possible but how would I mount the front of my 4.2 to an engine stand so I could do my chains. Would rather not keep the motor on the crane. But have sort of though about making a cradle.

i kept my engine on the crane but had it also resting on a tire to keep it from spinning around. not the best but it worked for.

i've also researched how to properly secure it a engine stand and it seemed most members on this site and others deemed it unsafe for the the engine block. there are mounting holes on the crank pulley side but you can only secure the top half i believe.

even the bentley manual shows a specific VAG engine stand that uses the engine mounts to secure it.

    hope this helps

I've seen it done somewhere , but I would not trust the threaded holes in front of the block(especially the tensionner and Idler bolts holes) for supporting the engine, as they are pretty small

I didn't really look into doing that when doing my timing as I built a wooden "cradle" to support the engine on the workbench

I also built mine with 2x4s, and used the shop crane to turn it as necessary. Just finished reinstalling pistons and rested it on the stand, lifting it to rotate the crank as necessary (using a couple of bolts in the flywheel holes and the handle of my wire brush to turn it - I only use the professional approach ; )
