    Another Spark Plug Thread...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I did a search and there is all kinds of conflicting info on this site, haha

I have a 2014 Audi S4 (APR Stage II). I'm at 28K miles. Changing out the spark plugs ahead of maintenance schedule and coil packs (its cheap maintenance).

I ordered the ignition service kit off ECS tuning which included the plugs and the coil packs. The plugs are Bosch 101905631G

Searching this site various posts say those plugs are supposed to be for the pre-facelift... mine is post-facelift (which is apparently supposed to be NGKs)... its the same engine for pre and post, does this actually make any difference? Am I good to use these plugs?

If so, I want to confirm the gap I should set the plugs to... .032? They appear to be pre-gapped at around .28

    And then finally, torque should be 22 ft/lbs? 22ft/lbs + 90 degrees? or 23 ft/lbs? haha

    Thanks,

    Chris

I called the dealership and they said it has to be the NGKs and not the Boshe... looks like I'll be sending these plugs back to ECS.

Based on the Audit parts catalogue both 101905631G (Bosch) and 101905611G (NGK) were applicable before 10.01.2011, only NGK part number applies afterwards.

So basically Bosch and NGK are interchangeable, were both officially supplied as OEM parts at some point in time.

My understanding is that genuine Audi for B8s was Bosch but both B8s and B8.5s are now both NGK

Gapping is still confusing me though... Straight NGK branded from ECS (not genuine VAG, albeit identical) came gapped for me at 0.030 while the NGK website says that they should be 0.032 for the 3.0 TFSI. Now I've heard that the VAG branded versions come gapped to specification but need to be checked. And I've been told conflicting numbers that genuine VAG is 0.032 and also 0.028. Although there isn't really much difference there

So it looks like most people gap to .028" for stage 2 BUT is that the OEM specification or is that just what the tuners have recommended? Taking my car back to stock for diagnosis and need OEM specs

OEM is .032, I gapped to .028 from my own experience with misfires and higher boost. I don't think there's a tuner recommendation, guys on this board are from .025/6 (dual pulley/E85) to .028 stage 2.
That's something that you'll have to play with and see what works for your car/tune.

IIRC, pre-FL cars were .028" on the Bosch, but Post-FL on the NGK's was .032". I could be wrong though...

Chris, the OEM NGK's are more than sufficient with the OEM gap. When I pulled my OEM plugs, they were actually between .026"-.030" (ran them on regular stage 2). I would gap them to .028" personally if I was stage II again, as I felt the .032" was slightly "tame" in feeling (could be placebo though as I didn't get to log) up top.

nope, not unless coils are not firing correctly.

My car did NOT like the 9's (lots of carbon build up on them after only a few weeks). Log for misfires and see what you get. I switched back to the 8's and all good.

other people have posted they had NGK's 9's make for lots of misfires. I just did the 8's and .30 gap, and my stage 1 car is pulling hard and smooth.

Sounds like I should go back to the 8's. Installed the NGK 9's when I went DP 1200 miles ago, seems to run good but haven't logged or anything

Go back to the 8s. We live about 2.5 hours apart and climate is fairly similar this time of the year.

I had the 9s in mine gapped at .026, misfires and pulling throttle %.

Back to the 8s (at .026) and the car pops again.

Now, when it gets 90+ (which doesn't happen often in Napa), 9s might be beneficial. Right now? Not so much.

So I just did my 55k maintenance and used NGK's from Europaparts. I didn't check the gaps on the plugs as I had heard they come pre-gapped. Do I need to pull the plugs again and check? Everything seems to be running fine. Actually, running much better since the plugs/oil change.
    Thoughts?

It is good to check gaps but maybe it will set you at ease that my b8.5 spark plugs when I pulled them were all gapped at around .028 and all of the ones that I purchased as replacements were all gapped at around .028.

I just replaced the original set on the car. Oddly the factory gaps that I pulled out were all over the place. Between 0.025 and 0.032 according to my feeler gauges.
