    S5 Motor Mounts

My passanger side motor mount is bad and needs replaced (causing issues with my manual transmission and shifting gears). Does anyone know if an aftermarket mount would work? Also, do both mounts need to be replaced at the same time if only one is bad?

    Thanks.

The labor is the most expensive and time consuming part of this. It'd make sense to do both mounts now, rather than having to tear the car apart again to do the other one.

You don't have to replace both but the thing with mounts is when one goes it puts heavy wear on the other. So both likely need done anyway.

I'd def look at aftermarket as I'm told our OE mounts are junk.

Definitely do both at the same time. I would go with the 034 Street Density mounts. They look identical to the OEM mounts except they are solid rubber and do not have the dampening fluid in them.

The only reason I went with OEM is because that's what my warranty would cover. Otherwise I'd have gone with non-adaptive aftermarket mounts.

I was told my one of my mounts has an extremely mild leak, and that they usually don't need replacing until around 90k. Can someone educate me on why solid rubber is better than oem fluid? Is solid rubber better quality for durability or ride quality. I would think fluid is used for ride quality. I just would like to know pros and cons of both if possible.

Durability and little play. When tuning one doesn't want a lot of engine slop. So it'll drive better but ride harsher. Although it wouldn't be bad at all.

The factory fills them with a fluid because the fluid acts as a dampener for vibration to provide a smooth and quiet ride. However to do this they have use rubber with thinner walls which means quicker failure. When I replaced my motor mounts the rubber was all but torn around the fluid cavity.

The 034 Street Density mounts are solid rubber. They should last much longer than OEM and give much better performance as it limits engine movement. However they would likely have increased vibration. I would have installed these in a heart beat when I did mine, but they weren't released yet. They were released 2 weeks after I replaced mine with OEM

Mine failed at ~68k. Bone stock car. The fluid leaked out and shorted out some electrical harness, which in turn caused the engine computer to freak right the hell out. The car was almost undrivable, it was running so rough. I was able to limp it home 3 miles to eventually be towed, but it was pretty hairy.

Isn't the fluid also electrically or magnetically reactive like the fluid used in some of the higher end active shock absorbers? The computer can apply a current to the fluid to make it more viscous, and thus tune the vibration characteristics for idle vs wide open throttle.

Thank you all for the input. Convenient thread for me. Only had the a month and a half. Almost forgot about the mount issue. I'll definitely have them replaced sooner than later, to avoid Jeff's scenario.

I had this exact same issue. No one would believe me that it was the mounts until I specifically told them to replace them. Even then the tech still wouldn't acknowledge that it was the mounts.

OP; go with the 034 ones. I did and there were not really any added NHV and they will last a hell of a lot longer (theoretically).

My passanger mount is bad and causing torque on the transmission so my gear shifter is moving around while in gear (back and forth when I let on and off the gas in gears 1,3,5). Well I believe that's whats causing it and I know the mount is bad from a thrown code but it doesnt throw a CEL.

Mine didn't trigger a CEL (that's usually only for emissions stuff). It did throw a VW chassis code though. You need VCDS or maybe Carista to read those.

They do. If anything call them and they will confirm.

Hey, I just dropped the 34 Motorsport in mine. Did the install myself. Just dropped the subframe and slid them in and out. Decently straight forward and im not to mechanically savvy...lol. But when Audi quotes me 2000 for them to do it ill try it out myself

I also have the 034 mounts on my V8. No noticeable increase in vibration. Hopefully they last longer then the oem did.

I just ticked 80k. And my mounts were both completely shot. Never threw a code and never had anything more than a hiccup every now and then. Just a lot of engine slop. I'd recommend doing JHM trans mount along with the motor mounts. it's 20 something dollars and a cake job while you are under there doing the motor mounts. I did all three and wow what a difference in pedal on/off and shifting.

I've got a strange shifting issue from 1 to 2 when leaving a stop at normal speeds, could this be a engine mount failure? If in S and the engine shifts at a higher rpm its smooth as silk but in D under a normal load its like being in a manual transmission car with someone learning to drive, the rpms drop it shifts then rpms match the gear.
