    'AUTO' headlights having issues?

    Hi guys,

I hadn't had my Audi A4 B8 (B8.5) for long and haven't had too much driving experience in it thus far.
I have so far been in the habit of operating the headlight manually, but recently decided to utilize the 'AUTO' headlight setting.

I'm wondering what I am experiencing is an issue or just normal Audi specs.
The headlight seems to like to stay ON in AUTO mode. for e.g this afternoon there was in traffic with a very glaring sun at 4:30pm, so there was a fair amount of light, the lights seemed to just stay ON, I could only notice It being ON looking at the refection off other vehicles rear bumper (the interior dash button illuminated red lights on the A4 is sometimes hard to notice during the day when they are ON and Audi hasn't implemented a headlight indicator on the instrument cluster)

I had tried turning it to 'O' and back to AUTO, but it just comes back ON.
I even tried between the Exterior Auto Headlight functions in the MMS between; Early, Medium and Late. it seemed to make no difference.

From memory, ive seen on some pretty responsive auto systems on jap cars such as Lexus & Toyotas, for e.g they will drive past under a bridge/overpass, the headlight comes ON but immediately as they pass the bridge about 3 seconds later, it turns back OFF.
I was driving behind what appears to be a newer/current model VW Passat with Ford Mustang looking-LED taillights... assuming they are similar cars sharing similar parts, and that cars Auto headlights appeared to do what the jap cars do also. But mine just kept wanting to stay ON.
So im wondering do the lights on Audis tend to like the stay ON? or is there any way to test whether the AUTO is working correctly? (where is the sensor?)

    any advice is welcome.

    cheers

Turn the sensitivity down in the car menu. I have mine on the lowest setting and they still come on earlier than I'd manually turn on the headlights, but it's better than the default setting.

I think that what you're describing is normal. At least mine act the same way. It should be early, medium, late and dusk or later. My daily drive is rarely in dark until winter so I've stopped using auto, I only switch to auto when I do need head lights on and at the end of the night switch back to off. It's also really annoying in auto that they turn on when pulling into the garage.

I wonder if down under Audi are coded with daytime running lights. The headlamp indicator turns green on my headlight switch when the headlights are on( in auto or manual mode). I have never coded daytime lights to see how it behaves.

Yes Australian Audis have Day time running lights.

For e.g if the light is on the 'O' (off) setting, the day time LED running lights stay on and are very bright.

but no there is only Early, Medium and Later... there isn't Dusk or late.

Yeah I paid a bit more attention this afternoon, and from what I can see, Audi and Merc headlights seem to want to stay ON even when there is reasonable amount of light... (heaps more sun than dusk but shadows from trees here and there etc).

Japanese cars seem to work differently, they seem to be more sensitive with outside ambient light. As soon as there is some light from the sun, theirs shut off.

It is quite annoying, as its daytime and the headlights just stubbornly stay ON all the time.

is the sensor on the back of the rear view mirror?, perhaps I should shine a torch to see if its working correctly?
