Catastrophic Failure to valves and pistons. Advice and guidance needed Pls.... :'(

The timing belt stripped and the tensioner pulley stripped the threads on the head whIle cruising at 65mph and rolled for about 100 ft. I bought everything needed for a complete timing belt change and found out about the interference engine. I decided to pull the head and found cylinder 2 completely gouged and thrashed. The head valves for that cylinder are done for and melted. The head seems to be useless now and the other 3 cylinders have a deep scratch/gouge in them. This is my first ever car purchase and experience with Audi. Im thinking of buying another complete engine. What should I do?

If the cylinder walls are all scratched up a used motor might be the cheapest route to take.

When this happened to me I used a dremel tool and a few different grits of sandpaper to get the gouges and scratches out of the pistons and get it back smooth. Got any pictures of the carnage?

The issue with doing that is now the Pistons have different masses which can throw off the balance of the rotating assemble. I'm sure it's possible to do? But you also don't know if the piston has a crack in it or not.

Well, I've been running these pistons for nearly 90k miles now in two different motors without issue. There was not much material taken off at all, just little bits of smoothing on the dings. It really depends how carnaged his pistons are.

So you first need to host the pics from a web based host like imageshack or Flickr or something similar. Then once you do that you'll copy the url of the photo and place it between an image tag.

Let us know if you can't get that to do it.

If you are using your phone you can upload them right from Tapatalk to the forum.

If you are going to pick up used pistons just make sure you pick up the right ones. I know for certain AEB engine codes use a 20mm wrist pin while AWM engine codes (2001 MY) use a 19mm wrist pin. I am unsure of the size of ATW wrist pins.

If the cylinder walls are good, you could get away with a hone, new rings and used pistons and a used head as that thing is toast too. But as Was said earlier, it will be cheaper and get you on the road quicker to just find an entire motor. Really sorry to see this.

Just so happens I've got an AEB head and used AEB rods and pistons ;) all in good working condition. Throw some rings and bearings at it and voila!

Any transverse or manual longitude 06a with fit in. If transverse, you'll need to swap over all the brackets so the mounts line up obviously. I paid 400$ for an awp with around 120k on it
