Terrible launch power in the summer heat from stock 2.0t Quattro w/Tiptronic

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
It seems like trying to take off from a stop is actually dangerously slow in the summer heat, we're talking it seems like there is a 2 second delay before there is any real power... If I was to do one mod would it be HFC or a Stage I tune? Or should I wait to do both at once to make a real difference?

I have been searching this forum but can't seem to figure out would be best to help for my particular problem I'd like to solve. Thank in advance!

Edit: Man, I've known about heatsoak, but after experiencing it in a non-turbo car the previous couple of summers and not owning a turbo in a long time, I didn't realize how simple of a solution a FMIC would be to fix it! Thanks for all the great tips, including solid budget option as well!

OK, can that be done without huge modifications? If not practical, what is the next best practical thing I can do?

I know I'll get around to that eventually, I love to mod... but where should I start from stock that isn't so invasive? Where I am, we use California emissions so it has a really restrictive cat converter, but there is also no visual check, so as long as I don't get a CEL I can upgrade to an HFC... But, would a 91 octane tune help more to do first, or should I get the HFC to help first and that way when I do tune it will be able to take in effect the better flow from the HFC?

JHM stage 1 tune (no mods needed) for instant power and to help with heat soak a JHM front mount intercooler which is a direct bolt on.

An intercooler isn't a huge modification. If you got upgraded SMICs for example they'd fit into the stock locations and would just require you to take off the bumper

Awesome, thanks for the tip! I didn't know there was a direct bolt on FMIC, I assumed a lot of fitting for that... So if I get the tune first then do HFC and/or FMIC will I need to re-tune or will it take into account the added/cooler flow happening?

Doesn't the JHM FMIC require cutting of the crash bar?

No need to re-tune. The car will adapt once installed. One of JHM's sponsors should be more than happy to help you out with your performance upgrade inquiries. They've made my car more fun to drive that's for sure.

That's the beauty of their FMIC options between small or large core...they both fit perfectly behind or underneath the crash bar. No alterations need to be done to the crash bar with either of their setups.

Their website says that proper installation requires modification of the front crash bar (large core)? I just assumed that meant that you'd have to cut away at it a bit to get the FMIC to fit behind the bar

It looks like the small core JHM might be a good way to go, but I'm not looking for massive power gains, I'm approaching middle age with an 8 year old son so I just want responsive and respectable performance, say 250 awhp eventually... I did confirm I need to upgrade my DV to handle more boost, so I'm looking at efficiency improvements first so I will probably do a HFC first if that alone will help with responsiveness to start with, then do tune same time as DV and then FMIC and HPFP... Now I have to decide which HFC to start with, JHM, or one of the other two I'm forgetting the name of but I do know there is one for only $279 with hardware on ECS tuning.

Go test pipe. Just save your factory cat an reinstall it again for whenever you need to resmog. That's what I am doing for California. After removing the factory cat my car feels so much more responsive and faster. I have some friends with high flow cat that are wanting to go test pipe now. Personally I was looking at high flow cat as well but then just said screw it an bought a test pipe.

I have the Awe which is a huge core and fits perfectly... you get what you pay for.

You can also do the ebay kit which is priced accordingly and similar to more pricey units. .. just have to figure out how much you want to spend.

I'm sorry but I have absolutely ZERO desire for a smelly and sooty car for 2 more HP and a turbo that spools a little faster... You guys are about ALL out performance, but an HFC is still a vast improvement over stock and I actually WANT to run clean. I thought I made it clear at the beginning of my post, but I'll explain in further detail why... My friends go test pipe/swap to stock for smog in their Subbies and DSM's because they are about all-out performance and their cars are stinky and dirty to show for it. I bought a classy Audi sedan because that's exactly what I want it to be, not a polluting, dirty boy-racer... Absolutely no offense personally, but since you went there, I thought I'd explain further... It's a philosophical thing like politics, you aren't going to change many people's minds. :) That said, an HFC alone is good for like 20+HP/30+TQ, so I strongly feel that a HFC along with a tune on top of that will get me where I want to be while still running clean.

Since you guys don't offer performance IC's, I'm looking at the small core JHM for $600 as the best balance of price, performance, quality and ease of installation... any argument with that? I'm not looking for 400+AWHP, I'll definitely be happy with 250-275... Edit: I'm seeing direct fit kits on eBay for around $280 that look decent, are those the ones you say are OK or are those junk?

What kind of power can be expected with the FMIC? I always assumed the logical progression is chip > downpipe > exhaust > FMIC.

FMIC doesn't yield any gains... it just allows the car to not lose as much due to warmer temps.
