Gonna Paint My Rims, Question is: What Colour?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I've had the regular B7 5-Spoke 17" rims stored away for quite some time. They're pretty scratched up with gauges, curb rash and all sorts of things and I figured since I probably can't sell them i would take the god awful Winda tires off and restore/repaint them. And if things go really well maybe even mount some winters on them. Now I was thinking a two-tone style, with black on the inner surfaces and maybe a gunmetal face or soemthing along the lines of that. These rims are pretty full in just stock alloy so I'd figure I'd try and have some fun with them, they being just a secondary set and all.

So my question is, what colour combo or just solid colour would you guys suggest or like to see?

It is worth noting I have a black 08 A4 (so fake s-line) with gunmetal 17" RS4 style rims.

First, I would suggest painting the entire wheel and not just the rim.

Color would depend on car color. (Whoops, missed that last line)

Gunmetal, black and silver are pretty universal colors and well played. If this is a second second set for winters, maybe consider something bolder. Plastidip allows doe some color experimentation without permanent commitment. Maybe a teal or safety orange / highlighter yellow?

There's no tires on the rims so I will be paintings the entirety of the rim, not just the part that shows. I tend to like to do things properly so I would prefer paint over plasti-dip. Since I have to sand them down and fix some gauges anyway paint seems to be easier for this.

I was also thinking maybe gunmetal and red? I'm sort of against black rims as they tend to hide the quality of the rims, so to me they every rim look cheap.

Rims are just the perimeter of the wheel wheels are the correct term, not rims.

I would probably do a cherry red or an electric blue if I were you. Something bold, that'll turn heads and contrast nicely with the snow

Have to say that I almost automatically ignore anyone that calls them "rims".

Gonna Paint My Rims, Question is: What Colour?

Just a word of advice, most aftermarket paint doesn't hold up very well on wheels. I see you're in Toronto? With all of the road debris, and sanded roads in the winter, the paint will chip. I'd recommend either powder coating or using plasti-dip.

Not sure what your plan for paint is but if you do go the paint route, make sure you use a high quality primer, and finish things with a two part clear. Rattle can paint will not cut it on wheels imho.

As for colour, I love gold wheels on black cars. I have a Dolphin Grey A4 and went with a dark copper almost bronze colour using plasti-dip.

Where I live we just call the alloy/steel and its entirety the rim. Probably just slang though, But if you want to be technical yes i will be painting the whole wheels.

And I can see that, I'm still leaning more toward the two tone style. But maybe even black with a bright colour? I'll post a picture of the rims on question once I get to my computer, I can't quite figure it out in my phone.

Don't worry I know, again I do plan on doing things properly with clear coat and all. So I'm hoping it will work out. This is more of an experiment anyway so if doesn't end up working well I'll be ok with it.

I do like that, I still have my chrome trim though, which might clash a little. That's a nice ride though.

Do you have aftermarket headlights or did you just remove the chrome on the OEM ones?

Those look pretty nice, I like how you left in between the spokes the regular alloy colour, adds character to them. Those are the style wheels I will be paining. Again I wouldn't mind being a bit more bold with the colours since this is more an experiment, and I'm also leaning more towards a two tone style. I think the copper with a gloss black would make for a nice rim, although in my opinion having gold wheels on a car that has chrome trim seems to be a bit to flashy? (I'm struggling to find the right word for that).

The headlights are oem halogens with the projector retrofit. I painted almost everything inside just to make it look more stealthy.

Those look nice. I got the bi-xenon headlights with black eyelids on them, but I like the look of the blacked out headlights like that. I like the RS4 Honeycomb grille too, really fits the car. Sweet ride man.

You can use plastidip first so that you can easily remove it if you don't like the outcome.
