Bigger turbo on 171xxx mile 1.8t

Just bought my first a4 1.8t its a 98 with 171xxx and wanna go to a bigger turbo eventually. My question is how will the engine hold up. There's no c.e.l. runs great and timing belt is on the way in the mail. My HP goal is close to 300 and would like to go with a gtrs or a gt2x set up. Should I save up for a spare engine as this is my daily?

Do a compression/ leak down test to see what kind of shape your rings are in. An oil analysis wouldn't hurt either.

Also, skip the gt2x turbo. a mixed flow FT would out perform it at a better price point, and probably be more reliable. However a 71r elim is a fantastic turbo if you want to go the elim route.

get a second engine, i got one in decent condition for $190 on craigslist. Also had a apr stage III (it just blew so running stock) and it has the gt2560r turbo and its not that fast, better off getting a gt2860rs or the gt2871r. Also welcome to the b5ers.

I ran a couple iterations of a gt28rs from about 180k to 225k. Motor always had slightly low compression, but otherwise held up fine.

If lookng for 300chp, just get the Franken turbo. Easiest and cheapest solotion for stock block. And if you want more power, convert to e85. This is what many do, and by far may be the cheapest recipe with proven results for the B5 A4 platform. Cant say the same about others.

Too big. Go for the 2860rs or the 2871r. I ran the 2871r full frame and now have the 3071r-wg and the 2871r was much more enjoyable.

A lot of people say Franken but there is no room for growth without swapping everything out. I would go 2871r Elim as you can run it on a stock block and add rods later and go for more power if you want. I have ran both 2871r and 3071r on a aeb completely stock, including a stock clutch. My car has 150,000 miles and still runs. It's a beater due to damage but runs fine. Just do all your maintenance first and make sure it's healthy.

what they said ^^^^ I run a GT2860rs and its a great street turbo that or the 2871r are good starting points to run safe boost till you get rods. A GT2860 + car will do 140 mhp so think about suspension and break upgrades.

Lots of build threads do some digging.
