Stupid auxiliary fan question...power comes from where???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hot as hell here the last couple days....95 degrees which is hot for us. Normally my AC kicks butt.....ice cold. But.....in this heat my car is doing the typical aux fan not working symptoms. Temp stays normal, right at the halfway mark and AC works great. Until I hit traffic....rush hour type crap. Then my temp gauge climbs to 3/4+ and AC blows warm until I get back to open road, then back to normal.

So I take a look....and like some other areas of this car when I bought it.....the aux fan is kinda frankensteined together it appears (note the zip ties). I have no idea if this is the stock fan or something the previous guy added. But I also can't find anywhere that power even goes to it. I haven't ripped it off yet because I can't find a proper torx bit, need to go buy one.

But I figure I'd ask if anyone knows where power should be coming from for this? Is it hidden anywhere? Is this fan even stock? If I can get it to work with even direct power I'll take it from there....but I can't even see how to power it.

Also thinking just ripping it out and going aftermarket with a toggle switch for the very occasional day when it gets hot like this.

    Thoughts? Ideas?

    Thanks.

Ok....found my #25 Torx bit and was able to pull it....and I see there is a power cable coming off the bottom....then it is routed and disappears through the radiator drivers side area. Any idea how to test this? I have NEVER seen this fan come on. Still thinking about just ditching it and going with something like this and operating it by a toggle switch only in the rare instances of this hot weather here.

I recently changed my aux fan with replacement from europa parts, like 120 bucks i think shipped. installation is straight forward. Remove the one little screw holding the fan, then you can twist the aux and boom, she pops right out.

the cable is routed from the fan, goes into the middle section of the back of the radiator, then goes under the driver side of radiator and goes up to those set of connectors by the power steering reservoir.

The connector is rounded on one end and flat on the other, if that helps at all. Once you find the connector, might as well test the fan first before replacing it. give it 12v and she should start spinning fast. If you give her 12v and nothing, shes dead.

If she works, it means the fan control module or whatever its called is burnt. That little sucker is located on driver side, right around the oil filter area. You can also check the input/output voltage on that if you want to.

Another thing, the thermoswitch that is located on passenger side right behind the radiator goes bad sometimes. I dont remember exactly what happens when it fails but I remember reading about it before I tested and replaced my aux fan.

Make sure you test the fan before shelling out 100+

Sorry to co-op the thread here, but is that the aux fan? Or is the other electric one behind the radiator considered the aux fan? My a/c hasn't been working, and the fan above works when connected straight to battery but the one behind the radiator does not. That just mean the fan is dead? Or would I still have an issue with the fan control module?

I've got both coming to me, but I may resell what I don't need.

The Aux fan is the one behind the radiator (not shown above) and if this dies can cause the AC not to work. This happened to me a couple of years ago so I replaced that dead fan with a new one and the AC worked again. Last year I had the front AC fan die on me (well, my wife) and had to do field repairs at a campground in central Oregon where I zip tied a generic fan in place of the old one and spliced in the wires. That was fun.

Great! That's what I thought! I should be getting a replacement in on Friday. I'm tired of sweating my ass off on my way to, well, anywhere.

I just saw the pics OP posted along with the thread. Facepalm.

Even though the info I posted was correct, its regarding the aux fan behind the radiator, not the aux fan in front of the radiator.

The fan in front of the radiator has two dedicated relays under the driver side foot panel, and I also believe it is plugged up through the fan control module. Before you buy a new fan make sure your relays are good and that module isnt burnt.

I've checked all the relays and they were fine. Probably should've mentioned that. A couple look slightly toasty, but when I connected the fan in FRONT of the condenser up to the battery, it spins fine. The one BEHIND the radiator on the passenger side does not spin at all when I do that. That's leading me to think it's the fan and not the FCM (which I am also getting in the same shipment as a precaution).

Replaced the fan behind the radiator and... NOTHING. No change in a/c behavior--still ECON. I tested the fan before putting it in just to double-check it worked. A/C refrigerant pressure sensor says "A/C LOW", which I take it to mean it's all good and fine, since I thought if it's out it'd throw an error.

So now what? Is my assumption above about the a/c refrigerant pressure sensor off basis?

I've heard the FCM is supposed to throw a code if it's bad, but I've got nothing. I have no idea how I'd actually do an output test, as I've seen some people suggest. Anything else I can test before I pull my hair out and throw serious monies at it?
