Everywhere I take my vehicle to get codes read I'm getting codes from coolant temp sensor, intake air temp sensor, occasional maf codes, and recently the shop I brought the car to pulled misfire cylinder 2. Without consulting first the shop owner took it upon himself to replace 2/4 coils, and put new spark plugs in. I'm beginning to think this guy is clueless as he wants to charge $207 for that simple task. Questions -What should the spark plugs be gapped at? Is this a reasonable price!?!? I could have done that for Much cheaper I assume.

I do notice when starting the car now fans come on and blow hard, as If I have the air conditioning full blast, I am not over heating, and other than cel, esp lights cars running with a few hiccups, most likely the ignition system. Does this sound like a coolant temp sensor or could it be something unseen/worse?

Ya have to take it to a shop that knows Audi/VW.

    Or get VCDS and DIY!

Dont want to DIY, then your at their mercy...

    ^ this really x100

I have had 3 b6s and every one of them had something simple messed up by a shop that looked like a major problem but I was able to solve with audizine help or simple logic deduction skills, these cars can last a long time if you know and can do DIY or you find a good shop that knows Audis, best is if you can find out what cars the mechanic owns, if one of them is a b6 you are good.

That post didn't help you at all sorry,

You can pick up red spark plug coils (stronger spark 2.0T coils) from Genuineaudiparts .com for $17.50 each

I can't remember the stock spark plug gap but Google knows and should be easy to find.

Also it really sounds like you need to have all codes cleared then drive a bit and have them read again so you have a better idea of what's currently going on.

Sounds like you definitely have a faulty coolant temp sensor since 1. you have the code for it, and 2. the loud fan noise you're describing.

I replaced mine last year after having the same symptoms. I don't remember exactly why, but the faulty sensor causes the fans to go full blast. My car sounded like a jet plane haha. Also my temperature gauge wouldn't work and the needle would just stay on cold. Not sure if you are experiencing that too.

If you have a 3.0 there is a DIY on here that I was able to use to get the job done. It took me about an hour but If you don't feel mechanically inclined I'd take it to an audi specialist only. You will probably leak some coolant when it's replaced (I did) and it has to be replaced with pink G12/G13 coolant. Not all shops carry that type of coolant, and anything else is bad for the entire system (something about the additives eating away at the rubber lines if I remember correctly).

As far as spark plug gap goes, you did not specify whether you have a 1.8 or a 3.0 so here are the specs for both according to my bentley manual.

    1.8 - 0.032 inch or 0.80mm
    3.0 - 0.44 inch or 1.1mm

Hope this helps. Best of luck with the car!

Thanks for the replys! The codes where cleared after new coils and plugs were put in, haven't picked my car up yet but was disapointed to hear for that simple fix it sets me back $207. I'd buy a vagcom and do it myself but this car sucks the life out of my wallet. Haha.

It would probably suck less life from your wallet if you do the work yourself.
