Tech package worth it?

Hi everyone - I have a 2011 BMW 328xi and I'm looking at getting a 2017 A4. I'm considering a premium plus with the cold weather package and parking plus. I live in a smaller city and rarely use my navi so I'm considering not getting the tech package and saving the $3,250. What are your thoughts on that? Any thoughts on the A4 overall? Thanks

That's hard to say. If I had ordered my car from the factory, I wouldn't have ordered the Tech Package. Just too expensive. But it came on the car that was available at another dealership, so I figured what the hell. I've always hated having to stick my Garmin up on my windshield, so the Tech Package with Navigation will be nice.

Well, now that I have it, I think I would sorely miss it if I had to switch to another car without the Tech Package. You never have to use the MMI screen and its controls on the console -- everything is right in front of you.

Is it essential to enjoy the car? No. But like I said, you get used to having it ... and my friends were all blown away when I showed them what it could do.

So I guess if you don't get it, you won't miss it or enjoy your car any less; But if you do get it, you will love it.

As far as the car itself, unless you are a car enthusiast, you probably wouldn't notice the B9 in a crowd. Its looks are classy, but subtle. It doesn't get a lot of looks from other drivers. Although the other day I was stopped at a light, and two teenage girls (about 15 to 17) walked by, and I saw one of the point to my car and mouth to the other, "I like that car." Made me feel good.

Meanwhile, the car rides, handles, stops, etc. great. This is my fourth A4, and by far the best. As I have said before -- and others have agreed -- Audi has elevated the A4 to A6 levels.

i thought this as well when i bought my S5 ... but MMI is so much more than just nav.. there are other features like being able to watch videos... individually setup your engine response, steering, suspension.. etc and a host of other stuff ... being it was my first Audi without Nav i automatically assume this was all that was missing.. boy was i wrong..

Thanks for the replies! I can get an A4 with the tech pack, cold weather and a few random things for 9% off. They couldn't find any without the tech pack so I have some serious thinking giving do.

The tech package also includes the side assist, if you're interested in that.

Yeah it seems to work well from videos I've seen online. One dealer has one with tech and the other has one without tech. It's a $2,300 difference, so that's making me lean towards tech. I still don't know though. Thanks!

I imagine the Digital Dash and HUD?
Auto folding side mirrors or they are part of something else?
Any difference with MMI screen size and handwriting recognition on the MMI controller?

I ordered my car without it with no regrets. Android Auto works great for navigation. The voice commands from my phone are fully integrated which is way faster then a built-in Audi nav. I test drove the launch edition which was loaded up and wasn't that impressed with the virtual cockpit. Plus I hear you have to pay for the premium services, what a joke. It doesn't even include a remote starter through the phone app, even my Jeep does.

I'm spending my saved dollars on an APR tune and 19" wheels which will still be less $$$ then the tech package.

Would it be a horrible idea getting a CPO 2016 A4? I'm having a tough time getting myself to want to pay 2.9% interest. I'm not sure if I wait if it will go down or if I should just pay cash for a CPO 2016.

Not sure if anyone in this thread is helping. All a matter of personal taste and opinion. For my part, I would not buy an Audi that was less than Prestige and fully loaded. But I also have some major perks through the overseas military program, so it would be dumb to shortchange myself on a car this impressive. Waiting on the S4 though.

But the rest of the features are why I needed it. The side assist is hugely important to me (driving in NYC traffic) and the audi connect and the pre-sense rear. I'm big into the safety features. The virtual cockpit, in my opinion, is more gimmicky than anything. It's essentially a mirror of the secondary MMI screen. Maybe if it had more options or was more customizable I might think it's more valuable.

But for me, safety is the no brainer.

I wouldn't do a '16. While the B8 A4 is still a nice car, the platform is quite outdated in comparison to the B9.

If you have the cash to buy a 2016 CPO outright, then I assume your loan on a B9 would be relatively small. The small amount of interest on that isn't a deal killer IMO.

Well said. From all the comments, reviews and specs, the B9 is a much improved update over the B8. And if in a few years you'd want to sell your 2017, you'd easily recoup that difference.

What is presence rear?

It monitors the rear of your car and if it detects a car coming too quickly it will tighten the seat belts and prepare for a collision. It's actually kicked in for me once and I was able to honk and the car missed me.

Yes, the B9 is a MUCH better car all around. Definitely worth the extra dollars. I got $3500 off from Audi Exchange in IL on a $45995 build. Not that far in price difference from a 16 CPO car.

I had this same question and now having gotten the tech package, im extremely glad I did. You're already springing for a new car, get the one you want. And the tech package is a def want. You get the MMI touch which is rad, the virtual cockpit is useful and cool, side assist helps, though I'm a safe driver anyway but glad to know its there. Also, the in dash screen is larger than without the tech package. Last thing I want is a tiny screen mounted to my dash.
At the end of the day, my justification was it being a brand new car, stuck with it for the next 5 years, wanting to have all the latest tech so it doesn't get boring or dated anytime soon.

Yes absolutely. I wouldn't want a B9 without it. I thought it wasn't a big deal, but I'm so glad I got it, i would have been kicking myself forever if I cheaped out on a few grand over these features. I think what you can live without is the Prestige model, but I think P+ with tech is where the sweet spot is.

The heads up display and top down "birds eye view" are both incredibly valuable (the latter especially for parking in confined spaces). I was able to see each of these demo'd at the S4 reveal in Frankfurt Germany last year, and they are very nice and powerful features. Really, if you are able to afford an Audi in the first place, you should be financially well off enough to get the whole thing.
