    TDI Stock Exhaust diameter

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I remember from an old Magnaflow post on their SQ5 axle back they commented that the stock piping on a 3.0T/SQ5 was less than 2.5" (54 mm to be exact). Does anyone know if the piping on the TDI is the same size or if it's bigger? If the damn emissions scandal ever gets resolved I'd like to upgrade my exhaust at some point and need to know what the stock size is before going to large. Thanks.

Tons of view but no replies? I can't believe no one has looked into this before. In any event, when I recover from surgery I will go physically measure to double check but I did find online that everything from Audi's 1.8T to the 4.2 liter V8 all utilize the same 55mm exhaust clamp from the main cat to the main muffler. Here is the link:

    https://www.europaparts.com/exhaust-...k0253141m.html

It seems preposterous to me a 1.8T has the same exhaust pipe diameter of a 3.0 or even 4.0 liter turbo. I would imagine both the 3.0T and the 3.0TDI would benefit greatly from at least 2.75 inch piping if not 3 inch.

We wish we could help, but unfortunately cant on this one because we havent tested the TDI yet. We can say that almost every Audi we've built a system for has used the 2.25" diameter stock piping, so that would be our educated guess, though we cannot say for sure until we've physically measured one. Most OE exhaust systems are undersized by the manufacturer because 95% of the time, the owner wont care about the performance difference, and larger piping=higher production costs.

Almost all engines can benefit from a larger diameter of exhaust piping, but when you increase the exhaust flow you also increase the air/fuel ratio(hence the performance gain) which can then lead to issues with emission compliance..... For the 3.0L TDI, I highly doubt you'll be able to modify the exhaust system substantially when and if Audi ever develops a fix. You'll be able to change tips, but anything more than that and I guarantee you'll risk not passing a smog test in California because smog test centers will be checking specifically for TDI fix compliance when this is all resolved. Thats the huge negative now with this scandal, it will lead to a deeper inspection of TDIs, which makes aftermarket modifications close to impossible at least while being tested, unfortunately.....

    Pitt,

Will measure my OEM exhaust this weekend for you....I replaced my OEM with a Magnaflow 15331 about 8 months ago.

It looks good and sound great...quiet at normal speeds and a nice deep tone when you get on it.

Curious why the Magnaflow guy can't find the specs on that?

We cant say for sure because we dont currently offer anything for the TDI, and havent had one in our R&D center to measure.

Dan listed the part number (15331) for the TDI specific exhaust from Magnaflow

    Pitt,

Check out this site. It is where I will most likely be getting my DPF Delete down pipe soon, along with a Stage 2 tune from BuzzKen.

Just waiting for this BS crap to be resolved.

    Pitt,

I was able to take a few pics before the storm hit last night. Looks like the stock pipe is 2.5 O.D. Which lines up with the DPF Delete pipe link I sent you earlier.

My question is, if you plan on going bigger, wouldn't you want to start at the Turbo outlet. If so, then wouldn't you want to do a Frankin Turbo setup?

Also, there is a guy in LA that has installed the Magnaflow exhaust (actually the only other guy I know of) setup on his car to. If you want his contact info....let me know.

Awesome Dan, thanks. Looks like the TDI's exhaust is slightly larger than the 3.0T. As far as modifying the turbo and all the post turbo exhaust, I don't want to go to wild (yet at least) due to warranty and Ca.'s strict emissions testing but I do have a great tune and I imagine the tuned engine would greatly benefit from even a slightly upgraded catback exhaust.

If your just looking for a better exhaust set up. Not many choices for us, at least not that I have found.

I am not sure who makes a better Downpipe that ins't a DPF delete. May have to look into a custom job for that.

Check Darkside Developments...they are out of the UK but with the British Pound not doing so great, might be worth while. I know I got 2 inter coolers from them..they both came within a week. Pretty happy with them. They installed fairly easily as well.

Would of suggested a Magnaflow set up but it seems like they don't make any...

What tune are you running? How you like it?

Do you have a Darkside intercooler for your Q5 TDI? I've been eyeing it.

I run the APR tune and I'm really happy with it.

Yes, Got 1 on mine..and about to install one on either my son's A4 2.0T. I am thinking US Spec A4 are petty much the same as Euro A4 TDIs, so it would him a better cooler for a reasonable price. I got it the day after UK voted to leave the EU and free shipping...so got a really good deal. If that doesn't work out, then it will go one the wife's Q5.

I have had good interaction with those guys...so would recommend them to anyone.

However, I do plan on getting my wife one too.

Guess I really need to update my Signature.

How noticeable is it on your Q5 the intercooler is aftermarket?

I painted mine Black so it isn't seen at all. I a firm believer in everything I do should look like it come from the factory that way.

Think this picture can explain it better....it is all the Mods I have done or in the process of doing.

You may also think about doing a Stock Airbox mod too.

Did mine, and been thinking about doing a "HOW TO" for us TDI guys.

I haven't found anyone with an aftermarket intake hose like the 3.0T guys have....been thinking about buying one second hand to figure out I could possibly build one.

    Sir,

Next week while I am away on business, I will work on doing a Stock Air Box mod.

I think so. they say it will work on a bunch of different models.

FYI I finally ordered the Magnaflow catback; I expect it to be delivered later today and hopefully installed tomorrow!

On a separate but related note, Dan, did you happen to notice much if any low rpm torque loss after installing the MF catback? I wouldn't imagine it to be much of an issue on these TDI's but I know I noticed it on other platforms.

They do; it's on their website (part # 15331) but more importantly it is now on my Q5 TDI. I absolutely love it; very little increase in sound from stock (which is exactly what I wanted) yet much lighter and less restrictive than the OEM system. My only very minor qualm is the tips are a tad too big to fit in with my "sleeper" look but I'm sure others just love the massive stainless steel tips poking out from the rear valance!

Not sure if it will also work for the Q7 3.0L TDI?

The fit and finish is excellent. It's hard to say if I feel a change in the butt dyno but hopefully it added at least a little power considering I already have a tune and an AFE Dry Flo filter.

It's just a catback so all emissions equipment is still in place. It does remove the very strict stock mufflers and replaces the factory >2.5 inch piping with 3 inch piping. The sound has come on more after the break in period and while it's still not loud it has a very pleasant, deep tone.
