My car is burning some oil!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So right before my first service (5,000 miles) I got a low oil light. I was about 1.5 quarts low. I didn't really think much of it as I knew it was the break in oil. So fast forward to right now, (7,500 miles) my engine oil level is about halfway on the display so Im guessing I am burning a little over a quart every 5k miles. I do drive my car hard 95% of the time and it has been hot out so I am not overly freaked out about it but wanted to see if anyone has experienced some oil consumption in their cars?

Before I got the S7 I was going to get a BMW Gran Coupe and was reading up on the forums and many owners were reporting massive oil consumption. I think BMW says 1 quart per 1,000 miles is within their threshold of normalcy!!! That just seems ridiculous so I am nowhere near that but haven't seen anyone post about oil consumption with the 4.0T so not sure why mine is burning some.

    Let me know,

    Let me know,
I'm curious what other S7/RS7 owners experience.

I drive a RS7 and I've consistently burned through at least 1 quart every 5,000 miles; usually earlier. I'm at 15,000 miles now, so I've added 3 quarts over that time. I drive in S mode 95% of the time and often upshift manually in 2nd/3rd at low speeds.

I now carry a quart of oil around with me in case I need to refill on the road.

I burn 0 oil in my 2016 S6. The break in process was pretty much the moto man method or aka drive it like you stole it. Have avout 6500 miles on my car now no issues previous to the first service and no issues after my first service.

I think your oil consumption sounds excessive.

    No leaks?

Just found this little tid bit in the manual. "Depending on the way the vehicle is driven and the operating conditions, oil consumption can be up to 1/2 quart per 600 miles" Wow!!!

Mines the same as your DJ. Burns about a quart between oil changes. Which I still do every 5000 miles or so.

Just had my 15k service. (Well 13,750 to be exact)

Prior to this I had the low oil level indicator once, and put 2 quarts in - this was around 9k, then I had a further quart at 12k. So its definitely using some oil. Im not tracking or driving hard either, just normal daily motoring, with a mix of highway and urban roads,

No visible oil leaks and exhaust is clean.

I would be really bummed if I burned that much oil though! Seems like a bailout for Audi!!!

Nope, 1 mile commute to work and very little traffic on freeways when I'm on them.

I've only had to add oil once in 30k miles and that was shortly after my stage 3 install. That being said, I never went the full mileage between oil changes. My R8 on the other hand needs a quart of oil between oil changes, every 4-5k miles or so. This was the same pre and post twin turbos.

Really think it depends on the car/motor and how you drive it. I don't worry too much about it, just keep an extra quart in the trunk as it's not exactly easy to find Audi/VW spec oil in a pinch.

Might be the problem if you commute only 1 mile each way to work. Nothing gets to operating temp. So you get plenty of oil blowby on your oil piston rings.

Interesting. I just had my 15k mi service (11mo and 10k mi since the last service). Neither time did I have any issues with low oil.

What he said. In 55k miles I was always a quart down between changes. I went 15k between changes and I had audicare to 45k. I never babied it ever. But then I traded it in for a 2016 and I expect to treat it the same. IMHO, the break in stuff is over rated. Maybe back in the early days it made a diff...today's metallurgy is so much more tolerant.

exactly what i was thinking. If you drive it in S and hard 95% of the time as you state this could be the issue. Nothing wrong with driving the car hard, i do it to mine every single day, but only after the oil is up to full operating temp. Until then i never go above 3000 RPM's.

So I do let my car fully warm up before I get on it for sure! Even when the rpm lights go away I always check my lap timer to make sure I'm at least at 190 degrees. Which is pretty easy as I get coffee every morning at my drive through place and its right across the street from my house but it does give my car some time to warm up.

This is fairly standard for modern forced induction cars that see high cylinder pressures (blow by) with EGR systems that recycle the vaporized oil gases back into the intake system to literally be burned off. As pointed out, this blow by is more prevalent on a cool motor (laws of thermal growth) as things seat better once the engine is thermally stable at operating temps. It's dependent on your driving style as more throttle means more pressure, more of the time.
Do it right, or don't bother.

    So I'm
Going to piggy back off of this. Three times now I have been burning oil to the extreme. All three times I've had to
Top off under 1000 miles in between. I am again less than 1000 miles from last top off and I am right above the minimum line. Not to mention I'm only getting roughly 12-13 mpg on gas, and this is an A7... Any thoughts on what the heck is going on? And yes I do drive hard 99.9% of the time..

    Ken,
That seems excessive. I usually get a low level warning (about a 1-1.5 qts low) right around 5000-6000 miles in with my 3.0T. That is typically right around where to do my own full synthetic oil changes. If the warning light comes on first, I'll just do it then. I also have a long term fuel average of ~23mpg. That said, I don't always drive aggressively. I do usually hit WOT a little bit eaxch day at some point though. I'm no slouch on the road but usually pacing along just quick enough to be in front of the pack.

    Your case sounds more extreme.
Do it right, or don't bother.

I think you guys may be right! I noticed my driving behavior this morning and looked at my temp when I would normally get on it and even though my redline went up to 6,500 I did notice the temperature through the lap timer was only 155 degrees so I am guessing this could have been contributing to some of my oil consumption. What is full operating temp, 190 degrees and above?

I had this problem in by B8 A5 and Audi finally acknowledged it with a class action lawsuit. I was putting in 1Q every 1000-1200 miles.
After running oil consumption tests and all, Audi ended up replacing the pistons. Pretty much a full rebuild of the engine.

Just recently got rid of the A5 for a RS7 so no complaints so far

Try the oil cap test.. If you can't get it off while the engine is running, it's bad.

Ok. So I tried the oil cap test. I can get it off but it's very hard and you can hear the suction sound, where its vacuum sucking like crazy. Is this normal or should I get it checked. I asked the guys when they did the stage 3 build if they noticed anything abnormal that might contribute to burning oil. They claim they noticed no oil dripping or anything. I'm about 2200 miles in since my last oil change and my gauge is about a quarter way down from the top.

There's supposed to be some vacuum, but fairly easy to remove regardless. If you've removed it once before, you'll know the difference.
Post a video up if you're not sure and see if someone can compare.

Can someone else post with yours, how hard is it to get off. As posted above, mine is suctioned on pretty tight. You can remove it but you have to pull pretty hard and you can hear the vacuum/suction sound.

Hey guys. Bumping this question back to the top. I'm trying to figure out if my PCV is working properly. Can someone check on your S6 or S7 how hard it is to pull off the oil cap while the engine is running? Mine is very difficult as there is a lot of suction pressure.
