    Resetting/recoding ABS after TIP-MANUAL conversion

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    So I have read in other places that its a bit tricky resetting ABS controller and it has proven so. Coding doesn't seem to stick and I'm not sure how to get it to work. I have tried doing it while TCM was connected but it wasn't accepting any changes then. I tried doing it while the ECM was still coded to TIP but still no go. The only thing now that I'm thinking of this, the first thing I did was recode the cluster, could that be the reason why it's not accepting any changes?

    And yea, I have tried several different combinations, and pretty sure I had the right one, but still no go.

    Nope. None of that matters. Technically you should be able to do it even without recoding the ECU. But I always do the ABS coding last, for whatever reason.
    So make sure ECU is coded to manual, the rest kind of doesn't matter?
    Try and clear all errors that will clear in the ECU and ABS module. Then You need to do a correct LOGIN to the ABS module first, Ross Tech has this documented fairly well per the chassis and brakes on the car. You determine this either just by knowing what you have or checking the build sticker on the chassis/ spare tire well or in the owners manual stuff.
    If the login works (I don't think it tells you if it's correct or not sometimes) then you recode the module per your options (manual trans/ 6 Cyl Gas/ US/ etc..).
    After that you will need to do the steering angle sensor calibration or the coding will NOT STAY.
    Many times it will make you do a stupid little drive straight, turn wheel procedure..sometimes it wont.

    This is how I've done it a dozen times and other than a mis-click and a glitch once or twice it always works.

    A dozen times? dude... I hope that's not because of a dozen tip to manual conversions. One time is enough for a lifetime, although I'm sure doing it 2nd+ time is easier...

    Anyway, i have persistent codes for missing o2 and temp sensors, think I'll be able to do with them? Or should I code them out first? I'll be trying this in an hour anyway, but thought I'd ask.

    failed again, will try after work again. Feel a bit stupid about this but not going to give up. Question about this though, when ABS module is selected, i see "soft coding" in one of the fields, based on that existing soft coding I looked in the "Coding" dialog and the popup kind of deciphered that I had some FRG60 brakes, so, using that knowledge I was trying to login and of course I don't know if it worked or not, but after that I go into coding and change the last digit to manual. Does it really matter if I choose the low range manual or regular manual? I do have the A6 gearbox. I tried both but I didn't see softcoding box change.

    Tried doing the steering alignment but couldn't figure that out.

    Should the car be running?

    Luckily not from swapping, I've done it on two swap cars and a pile of others for a variety of ABS stuff. Recently on an S6 due to bad ABS module. Did you get the ECU coding change to work? It should be coded as manual as well, and I usually make that step 1. The swaps I have done this on neither had the TCU in the car at all, so I know that is not a factor.
    If you have FNRG-60 brakes then :

    3 = FNRG-60 (Teves/ATE) [PR-1LA/1LG]

    05393 3= being the brakes and LAST digit of 3 = manual transmission. This should be the login? Though..now that I think about it if it's coded for auto as-is then you might try using 7 as the last digit? Can't remember how I did the last one.
    But your login in should be 05393 ( or 05397 if auto).

    After that you go to the SOFT Coding and try : 06495
    0= always first digit for this
    6 = Audi A6 (4B)
    4 = FNRG-60 (Teves/ATE) [PR-1LA/1LG]
    9 = 6/8/12 Cyl. Gasoline
    5= 5 = Manual

    Low range is pretty much ROW, or mostly Europe..US never got that as far as I've seen.
    Then go down to the BASIC SETTING for the SAS. FWIW, most of the time the coding will not stick if you don't complete the Steering Angle Sensor adaptation at the same time. Sometimes it does..usually not.

    Note #1: After Login has been carried out you need to Recode the control module then perform the Steering Angle Sensor Calibration. Do NOT exit the Control Module in between the individual steps.
    Note #2: For Audi A8 (4D) always use 4 as Selection for Brakes.
    Note #3: The Production Codes (PR-Code) such as 1LX can be found on a Sticker near the Spare Tire Well and/or the 1st Page of the Service Manual.

    0xx?x: Engine
    5 = 4/6/8 Cyl. Diesel
    7 = 4/5 Cyl. Gasoline
    9 = 6/8/12 Cyl. Gasoline
    0xxx?: Transmission
    3 = Manual with Low Range (only Audi A6 Allroad)
    5 = Manual
    7 = Automatic (01L/01N/01V)
    9 = Multitronic (01J)

    After that try and get this done without turning off the key, seems to be the most reliable way of getting it all done.

    It seems that i have a persistent code, module not correctly coded if ecu is set to auto, if I change ecu back to auto it then complains about TCM bus being open, and it seems that it could be preventing the change from sticking.

    I have read that another guy had a similar issue with bel version of allroad, I guess I can try with TCM connected...

    Code ECU to manual, then try the ABS procedures. That's how I've done it and pretty sure everyone else too. Last swap I helped with was an S4/ BEL engine transplant + ECU and worked fine...
    either way you're going to have a module incorrectly coded error, since your ECU will be manual and the ABS is looking for an Auto/ TCU. So, you should be able to yank the TCU and code ABS to match the ECU.

    Well, I tried with manual, was able to do steering angle calibration, but still no go. I guess let me ask you this, after you log in and the go to coding and change the code to 06495, and click done and go, in the main window does the soft coding box change right away? Or after you perform steering angle?

    For me it never changes, the screen refreshes but it still stays as 06497, does that mean login was incorrect?

    Well, after trying a few more times, it finally worked... Thanks for your help.

    Now for some reason I still have abs and brake light on, but no codes.

    allroad_22, did you ever figure out why your ABS and brake light were on after soft coding?
