Late Shifter Linkage on Early Trans

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I bought a used 01E (early) to replace my current (late) trans and didn't think about the linkage until afterwards.

From what I've found, the only difference between the two is the cross rod and how it bolts to the shift selector cover, but I haven't found much about any other differences.

So, my question is, are these compatible if I swap the selector shaft cover from my late trans on to the early trans and use my existing late style linkage and cross rod? Or do I need to find a set of early style linkage and shifter?

well if anyone is curious, I swapped the shift selector cover (to the late version) and hooked it up to the late linkage. Engine is in the car and goes into all gears trouble free.

Hopefully driving it this weekend/early next week to confirm full functionality

Well I tried it. No problems. Hopefully this will help someone swapping an early trans into a late car.

it works but the problem is your shifting is diagonal instead of straight. instead of I I I you have / / /

The only thing different on the trans is that cover you swapped so wont be an issue. Some covers have both mounting points.
I cant remember which combo it is that doesnt work offhand, but you will know because the crossrod will bind on one of the detents.

If you use the wrong shifter you will get what Dave mentioned above.
There are only 2 things needed to make an Audi work properly - Duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't - Duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should - WD40.

For this scenario, it didn't change the pattern at all. Must be because I changed the selector cover to the one that has the early and late tapped holes. I just wanted to make sure because there is a small casting feature on the inside of that cover on the early version that was eliminated on the late.

So, early trans with early/late selector cover and late linkage = G2G

Ya, the covers are what need to match the linkage... and obviously linkage to the correct shifter.

I just did this. Car came stock with late trans, late linkage, late cross rod, etc. I put in an early trans and swapped my selector cover from my stock late trans to the rebuilt early and used the correct late hole. But I am getting what DxC mentioned. My shifts are angled /// instead of |||. I also put in the late JHM cross rod, JHM delrin bushing, JHM solid short shifter, and rebuilt the linkage socket on driver side with oem kit. For the cross rod on the passenger side I used one supplied washer below the bushing, and one supplied washer above the bushing, is this correct? Anyone know of what could be going on? Is this angled shifts only present if you use the wrong hole?

Another question. With my JHM short shifter and full setup, a few of my gears have very little to zero play (2nd and 5th gear particularly), whereas the other gears still have some play. What could be causing this? How can I make all of my gears have no play?

    Thanks in advance,
    Ryan

Having the wrong shifter does that. Maybe just the foot flipped over and kicked off the wrong way?
Early has a straight foot and straight linkage, late has angled foot with angled linkage.
If you mix them up, it rotates the ankle? and your shifter doesnt go straight forward and backward.

Hmmm, the car came stock with everything late and all the components that I replaced are late. Only mix is the replacement trans is early so I put the late cap on it. So I feel like my setup should all work. Could you explain what you mean by the foot flipping over and kicking off and the ankle rotating? Do you mean the black piece on the bottom of the shifter that you bolt the shift linkage to?

Thanks zillarob! Ended up being that JHM sent it with the incorrect metal foot (the straight one). JHM sent me the correct piece (angled) and now she's shifting happy!

    It goes by the linkage.
    Early wants the straight foot
    Late wants the angled foot
