    New engine seems hot.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So finally got car running, fluids are all to spec all to level, oil pressure is good now that I have a good gauge.

But it just seems hot under the hood. Overly hot. Billet valve cover is new to me I assumed it wud be warm to touch, but it's hot.

Cam timing housing too. Now it's been almost 2 years since I've driven it. And I just might be super cautious right now. But is this normal??

Temp sensors work, and it's not going over the usual temp. Should I be this concerned?

I just bought my a4 and all I can say is, after im done driving, If I open the hood to check anything I have to leave it open for like 5 minutes and come back to it otherwise its just so hot in there I can barely get in the bay! So I would say yes its normal (mines completely stock) maybe someone with the same valve cover etc can chime it.

But I'd say under the hood is like crawling in a 400 degree oven

Lol I remember it being hot w the 2863 turbo and the k04. I just seem to feel like this is a 450 degree oven as I'm used to the 400 degree unit. Lol.

I'll wait for someone to chime in as suggested.

    Thanks for feedback!

Mine runs pretty warm... then again I did catch on fire the other day :P

Engines get warm. As long as you don't see anything melting, your oil is a quality oil and your coolant temps are running fine I would assume you're okay. The turbo can get glowing red depending on how hard you push it.

If you feel something is wrong I would look into it or have someone who would know look but odds are you're being paranoid.

DISCLAIMER: I can't see or feel your engine bay so these are just my internet opinions :D

Ya paranoid is understatement on how much $$$$ is now under that hood.

I'm going to bring home infrared scanner from work and keep that around to see how hot it's getting.

Ok I'm going to go flash for break in and go for a short drive. See how it feels on the road.

At idle right now NVH is nearly unbearable...... Damn solid motor mounts.

    What is NVH?

I have solid mounts and it vibrates a bit but when I did the 1.8t swap it actually made it smoother.. thought it would be worse without those fancy balance shafts... :P

If your temp gauge is good, you are good.

Engines are hot. You couldn't make any sort of accurate judgement after not driving the car for two years, anyway.

    Noise vibration harshness.

Mines insane. Literally everything has a good vibration to it. Have yet to drive due to tune though. I think it will be fine above 1000 rpm though.

I have a Drake's metal valve cover. With the gtx turbo the engine bay gets HOT as hell after a long ride and the billet valve cover will burn your hand if touched. Still, the temp gauge stays in the middle and I haven't noticed any other issues.

Welcome to the 1.8T oil pump and BS deletion... My Idle at 800 does have some rattles in the cabin, smooths after 1000RPM but then seems to have a second resonance around 2500-3000.

As far as heat, yeah, it gets hot, but I would say as long at your coolant temps are normal you are fine. I run an oil temp gauge as well and it gets to 80C normal, had it up to 95C on a hot day. My upper limit is 135 before oil breaks down.

Lmfao! This just made everything more understandable! If only more used the emojis properly the word wud be a better place!! It's insane man. Others post some increase in NVH this is more then a mild increase in NVH.

Thanks for the input mates I'm clearly being paranoid. And I think I've just been out of this car for a bit too long.

Flashing break in file. No bumper on yet. No leaks no issues it seems. Maybe a bit of a drive b4 work see how this new thing feels on the road

It doesn’t help that the whole engine bay is sealed against the hood, so the heat has nowhere to go before you open the hood.

I'll swing by this weekend and you can use the IR gauge on my car after a 40 minute drive. That way we can compare VCs as we have nearly identical ones. I would still suggest a turbo blanket/exhaust thermal wrap. Then I would suggest DEI Reflect a Gold on your intake parts and underside of the hood.

Do you have your cat wrapped with exhaust wrap?
When I swap my turbo out, I plan on wrapping the cat with some. You should consider doing the same. It'll help with those under hood temps.

No wrap on exhaust mixed reviews on doing so. Maybe on the upper parts that lead into the engine bay or a turbo blanket might help too.

James I'll have the IR scanner so we can do that test. Interested as I don't remember the plastic one getting this warm. Obviously yes warm but clearly as most know the metal parts seem to hold heat a bit.

I personally woul not wrap the exhaust / header.

For the NVH, motor mounts are making it the worst giving you no isolation. At fist I thought my rear window was dirty, then I realized it was just my rear view mirror vibrating making the defroster lines blur

I know there's been hits and misses on the wrapping. Perhaps just a blanket then?? Good quality one though not anything cheapy cheapy.

Lol I know what your saying. Mines crazy the hood up looks like it's moving like CN tower (Toronto) it was swaying 2" thought it was gonna close on me. I'll get used to it.....

Thanks for input guys I'll get it scanner tonight and post finding some time tomorrow. Working nights really kills my time for activities

As said before, if you temp gauge is fine, you're fine. The temperature of the VC may be the same, but the heat transfer higher (making it feel hotter) as it is made of metal (better conductor of heat).

Funny... when I did the 1.8t my vibrations went down. Could be that my stock pump was crapping out and causing vibrations but I do not have anyway to really test that. I have the 034 solid mounts and snub mount as well. Smooth as butter compared to before the swap. Very little vibration at idle.

Your not the first to say the same. I've read a number of different reviews. Mine was 100% balanced crankshaft rods Pistons and all from what I was told. I've yet to see a bill though so tuning gruppe might not have had everything done. I don't know. And at this point it seems like I will likely never know since I've recieved the motor and only been promised that I would get the info. Car purrs like a kitten though.

It's an oven in the engine bay. This is my first turbo car; all my other cars were naturally aspirated.

That said, every component in the engine bay gets so hot.

Imo its a idea. This will increase the internal temperature of the turbo when the engine is shut down not allowing heat to escape and cooking the oil and coolant. But this is just my opinion on it

Last night I read the exact same description on these turbo blankets. I won't be going this route or wrapping anything. Best plan let it cool down and maybe open hood after some driving.

I remember my K03 glowing bright red after a spirited drive home. Turbos get hot period. Your GTX is in stock location which means it was German designed to handle glowing red hot turbo exhaust housings and manifolds. If you were top mount, I would consider insulating the hood to keep the pain from bubbling but that isn't your situation.

Glad to hear she is purring like a kitten. Mine seems to running smooth as well.

Get a remote starter ed. This way you can keep the engine running for a set determined amount of time to cool down without the keys in car and locked up. They have a setting for post run option

Get some value out of all that wasted heat!
Eggs off of the billet valve cover were delicious. Tasted like exhaust fumes, tiny bit of oil residue, some sweat a lil blood. So good!!!!

Was joking at work with a few guys here from Ireland they suggested sectioning the hood w a piece of stainless unpainted and a drip edge to it. That way after my spirited drives if my blood sugars a little off I can cook up full meals road side. But then I need to turn something in side into a fridge/freezer............ Time to trade in the sedan and get an avant. Roof top sleeper like most of those avant guys buy (I bet it feels like they're sleeping in a Thule coffin). Oh man this is gonna get expensive again!

Funny u mention this. Bought a "new used" remote starter last Christmas and i think it does have an "ignition off run time" option. Wonder where I put it...... Thanks for that. If I can use it on my 6 speed and it will allow the turbo timer option. It's going in the car soon.

As far as I can remember, our engine bay has always been VERY hot. I once wanted to spray the engine clean at one of those coin-op car wash places but decided not to for fearing that the water might end up 'cracking' its block due to being so damn hot!

I have this ed in my MK1 GTI. Since the turbo is only oil cooled. I have to let to cool down before it shuts off or the oil will coke up after time in

I've got solid motor mounts in my new B7 and the vibrations really aren't that bad. From what I've heard, the trans mount will transfer more NVH to the cabin if upgraded to a stiffer mount.

That's where I'm getting it from. Solid motor mount and upgraded trans mount too. I think it's the stern unit was installed awhile ago. I'm thinking the same that it's the combo that's making mine this rigid or harsh in the cabin. But then again I don't feel like I'll care when shifting it through the gears around town, the highway or the track
